I have to get through the dreaded Tenderness of Wolves first. Otherwise, I will report back. I bought The Take after the miniseries for my last holiday and didn't get to read it.

let me know if you get thru "Tenderness..."  I bought it based on the back cover blurb and have started reading it at least twice... haven't made it past about page 20 yet tho.

There are many better books about Canada. When I have had some coffee and remember, perhaps I'll post them here.  ;)

Tenderness of Wolves was rubbish! Life's too short for bad books - toss it and start something else!  ;D

I just finished Joseph O'Connor's new book - Ghost Light. It's possibly the best thing I've read in the last 10 years. OK, maybe not. But I'm putting it in my Top 5. Absolutely beatiful, sad, touching, poignant, etc. without being mawkish in the least. Gorgeous.

And now it's put me on a Synge kick, so I'm reading his biography. Next up is a re-read of some of his plays.

I'm also reading David Nobb's new one - Obstacles to Young Love. I saw him speak at the Hay Festival yesterday and I fell a little bit in love with him. The book's pretty funny too.

I am finally getting stuck into Jude the Obscure - Thomas Hardy.  I think my reading habits might be the opposite of some of you...I'd rather read a heavy, depressing book in the summertime when the weather is pleasant-ish, and then light fun reads in the wintertime when the weather is depressing out.  Keeps me on balance emotionally.

This is me!  ;D  Reading four-hundred page biographies on the beach.  Comedy travel stories in February.

I often go for classics too.  Jude the Obscure is so bleak though.  It's truly a book to be read (by me) only during the height of summer and preferably on vacation.

My MIL brought over a couple of James Patterson novels. Not really my thing, but I need a distraction and it will give us something to talk about next time I see her, so I'm gonna go for it.

Seriously, that's a bit ancient.  :P I read the book in school and saw the film with my dad.

I recommend Carol Shields, Gail Anderson Dargatz, Beatrice Culleton, Tomson Highway and Michael Ondaatje as favourite Canadian authors off the top of my head, though I know there are books of that time period by Canadians as well, but I think the lack of enjoyment of Tenderness is blocking my brain!   ;D

Hope you are OK?  :) Truly apologise if I offended you.

Think I am giving up on Tenderness and will just return it to my friend. Made it to page 92 since last September.

I had to read it for book club a few years ago, so I persisted and read the whole thing. Trust me - it doesn't get any better beyond page 92.

Thanks. I am confident about dumping it without guilt.  ;D I think I am supposed to like it 'cause it's about Canada?  ???

If you were British, would you like every book written about Britain? If you were American, would you like every book written about America?

Pah. It was awful.

Did you know that Stef Penney has never been to Canada?

Finally finished the Will Self novel I've been working on for too long.  Starting A Confederacy of Dunces after I get some work done.
