If you were British, would you like every book written about Britain? If you were American, would you like every book written about America?

Pah. It was awful.

Did you know that Stef Penney has never been to Canada?

I heard Stef Penney  has agoraphobia and if that's true then how could she ever go to Canada? Terrible book: agreed.

I think my friend thought I would like it for the reason it's about my (other) country, but on the same line of logic, people in the UK have sometimes assumed I'd love every other Canadian / American I have met here. And I haven't. And if I have, it's not necessarily because they are Canadian / American. And in Canada, I can get introduced to the token Brit for the same reason.  ::)

Hope you are OK?  :) Truly apologise if I offended you.

Think I am giving up on Tenderness and will just return it to my friend. Made it to page 92 since last September.

naw, don't worry.. I am just , as my wife would say "taking the piss"  and I think my copy of Tenderness is going to wind up in the local free library... the back cover offered so much and then it's so difficult to actually get into.

I think wind ups are hard to do forum style, no?  ;)

The library is a great home for Tenderness, indeed!  :)

Finally finished all the books in Alexander McCall Smith's 44 Scotland Street series. I really enjoyed them and would recommend the series.

Next up is The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry. I really enjoyed his book The Long, Long Way so I'm looking forward to this one.

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. I'm so blown away by the quality of the writing so far. It's amazing. I usually fly through books but I'm only about 30 pages into this one so far because I want to take my time and read certain passages again before moving on. The imagery and symbolism is just stunning. It's been a long while since I've read a book that really captured me as much as this one.

Love this book. Right now, I'm reading Tove Jannson's book of short stories.  Lovely so far.

Started reading "Absolute Power" by David Baldachi, got about 2 chapters in and thought it seemed familiar and realised it was the movie "Murder at 1600"

I'm almost done with The Kite Runner.

I haven't seen the movie.  Is it any good?

Just finished a Barbara Vine and am now on Jonathan Coe's What a Carve Up. Not in the mood for anything too heavy at the moment.

It's been a few years, but I seem to recall thinking it was pretty good. Also that it was very true to the book.

Thanks for that.  :)  I was thinking of putting it next on our Lovefilm, but not if it was going to be a big disappointment after the book.

Sounds like I should do both - they've been on my mental list for some time.

Loved the film, but haven't read the book, though I've been meaning to for ages.

Finished The Handmaid's Tale. I think it's one of the best books I've ever read! Read Dead in the Family at long last (yay for Sookie Stackhouse!) and now I am about to start on The Lovely Bones.  :)

Jewlz, I think you and I are reading soulmates.  The Handmaid's Tale is in my reading top ten, nay top 5.  And I absolutely adored The Lovely Bones, although I wasn't so fond of Lucky (Sebold's memoir about her rape). And, I'm totally hooked to the Sookie Stackhouse books.  ;)  If you haven't read Geek Love- it may be something to lay your hands on.  It's another favorite.

I am reading Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri.  I loved The Namesake and that other book she won the Pulitzer for, and so far so good.
