That's on my "To read" list. :)

It is quick, but definitely worth reading!

I'm currently finishing "Johannes Cabal, Detective"; I think it's hilarious. Moving towards a few mystery novels for our holiday in Sri Lanka.

Ooh, have fun in Sri Lanka! It's a gorgeous country. :)

The Uncommon Reader, by Alan Bennett. It's a very quick read (which I'm kind of regretting, I'm halfway through after 1 tube journey), and fun.

I loved it!

The latest issue of Granta "Going Back" is really good:  100 Fears of Solitude by Crowther is thought provoking (ironic to be posting that on an internet forum) and the Richard Russo piece about upstate New York is so bittersweet I want to try one of his novels.

I just finished The Earth Hums in B Flat by Mari Strachan. Dark but innocent at the same time. And lovely evocative descriptions of a Welsh village in the '50s.

Loved that book.  I thought it was such an evocative book and managed to keep hold of both the innocence of the narrator and a sense of the world around the story. I especially loved the Toby Jugs.
Right now I'm reading "The Arsenic Century" which is about the prevalence (and danger) of arsenic during the Victorian period. So far, so fascinating.

Yes, the Toby jugs!

I'm going to hear Mari Strachan speak at our local library tomorrow evening, so I wanted to make sure I'd read the book beforehand. I thought it was a pretty remarkable first novel!

Tolstoy lied by Rachel Kadish. Pretty good so far but I get annoyed by books without chapter breaks.

Snow in August by Peter Hamill. Really good so far, the imagery of Brooklyn in the 1946 is great.

Did you like it? I really enjoyed that series! I liked how he played with "typical" fantasy stuff by having his hero struggle with powers everyone else took for granted. Also, well, I thought it was funny. :)

I just finished, and loved, "Mystery Man" by Bateman. Sooo very funny.  Moving on to "Stories" edited by Neil Gaiman.

I'm re-reading it, actually. :) I read the first 2 a few years ago but never caught up with the rest of the series, so now I'm rectifying that. I agree, it's nice that the hero isn't your typical all-powerful wonder-child type. I also like that Jim Butcher throws in several character sets/plot lines without it being overly chaotic (*cough*George R.R. Martin*cough*).
