I am also firmly in the Jane Eyre camp.  Everyone in Wuthering Heights is just so unpleasant.  That said, however, I absolutely loved the miniseries version of it from last year, with Tom Hardy and Charlotte Riley.  They managed to make their characters sympathetic, which is no mean feat.  If anyone hasn't seen it, I highly recommend you do.

I haven't seen this--I will definitely watch it!  Yes, it's hard (and pretty much goes against the grain of the book) to make them sympathetic, so sounds good!

Has anyone else seen that the RSC is doing a musical version of "Matilda"? Written by Tim Minchin.
I am currently contemplating which/how many body parts to theoretically offer up for some tickets. I would LOVE to see that.

I am finishing Broken by Daniel Clay and my kitchen reading is French provincial cooking by Elizabeth David.  It's my new thing.  I used to just read whatever I was reading generally whilst cooking.  For a few months I've taken out books on food/cookbooks to look when in the kitchen.  I don't want to buy every cookbook that strikes my fancy (I'd have no room in my kitchen), so this is a nice alternative.  I am considering getting rid of my old cookbooks (save about three) and replacing them with up to date ones.  For now, I am sticking to this.

Just finished First Lord's Fury, which finishes up the Codex Alera series. I quite liked how it turned out, though I did skim through some of the battle/warfare stuff because I couldn't picture what was going on anyway.

Have you read An Omelette and a Glass of Wine? I adore Elizabeth David.

I'm reading Helen Dumore's Zennor in Darkness which is wonderful.

I am still reading (sigh) the Finkler Question by Howard Jacobson.  He just won the Man Booker prize for this book.  Maybe this book would appeal more to men.  Do you think there is a Woman Booker prize?

What's it about?  I walked to Zennor once from I forget where and it took ages, but when I caught sight of the sea my heart soared!  I'd love to get back there someday soon.

It's fiction, but is about D.H. Lawrence and his German wife who lived in Zennor during WWI. The whole area was very suspicious of them and accused them of sending signals out to sea, etc. It's also about a St. Ives family, all the cousins, etc. I haven't got too far yet, so I'm not sure what the connection is going to be between Lawrence and the St. Ives family. I love reading books about places I know well. If you know Zennor at all, I think you'll really like it!

I'd give anything to live out there, but whenever I mention it DH starts saying things like "bleak" and "remote" ... but I know I'd love it!

Bleak and remote Cornish seaside village sounds wonderful to me!  I may try this book though I've never been attracted to war-time stuff....

Just saw your post on this. I loved that miniseries last year. I thought the casting was great. I wish they hadn't changed things around so much
Spoiler: show
like putting the graveyard scene at the beginning
since that's the creepiest part of the book and I thought there should have been more build-up for that. Hope they show it again this year.

Edited for spelling.
