Thinking of starting The Alienist next... it's either that or English Passengers, haven't decided.

I finally read Secret Garden which I had as a kid but I thought the bookending on the PBS version was dark and scary so I didn't read it. I really enjoyed it until I got to all the stuff about "magic" and how overnight the kid goes from a bedridden cripple to running marathons.

I have both here, so I definitely will! I went on a book-buying spree at New Year and I'm still reading through that stack.  :) I'm reading The Alienist now and enjoying it so far, but only a few chapters in, will start English Passengers next, probably.  :D

I'm re-reading Twilight. Yes, again;it's my "lunch" reading book. I can't read on my ipod, because ipods aren't allowed, even in the the staff room. ::) What a waste. I've got so many ebooks, and I can't make use of them!  :-X

Are Kindles or other e-Readers allowed?

I am reading How We Are Hungry by Dave Eggers, which I am enjoying a lot more than I thought I would.

They aren't allowed as a safeguarding pre caution as ipods have cameras on them. I bring the device with me, but only use it to play a game app while on the bus. The world of UK childcare is a bureaucratic nightmare. Our staffroom is upstairs, well away from the main nursery! I don't know about any other ebook readers because I can't afford another, and I don't want to take any chances buying yet another device that will go only half used.  :P

Weird. I work at a school, and know nothing about iPods not being allowed. I use mine occasionally on my lunch break and no one has said anything (plus I work in HR there, so hopefully I should know if they weren't allowed!) But mine has no camera on it anyway, its an older model (just a classic 60g one, not an iPod touch or anything). Different schools and nurseries have different policies, so I guess your place must have put more thought into it. We do have some kind of camera policy, but I just never applied it to my iPod!  ???

Yeah, I have an itouch, "4th gen"; got it last year for my birthday. There's a sign on our door asking everyone entering the building to switch their mobiles and other devices before entering the building. I'm guessing it has to do with that careworker who was taking photos on her phone last year. Oh well. It's not that bad, just don't like that my ebooks go un-read.  :-X

I've been reading that in French, sort of intermittently with other books because it requires a lot of concentration.  The little girl is easy to read but the old woman uses a lot of vocabulary that I don't know.  I'd love to hear what you think of the translation.

First of all, I am impressed that you are tackling this book in French.

I don't think anything was lost in the translation.  Both the old woman and the little girl are interesting characters who are funny, charming, insightful, and sad. I can see why you would have difficulty with translating the old woman - she uses big words like such as autodidacts. The chapter entitled Refusing the Fight bored me.  I am up to Profound Thought No.6.  This isn't the most exciting book I've read, but there is something about it that makes me want to keep on reading it.

Again, I am impressed that you are reading this in French.  Well done!  If you want to switch to English, I'll send you my copy when I am finished.

Thanks, though for full disclosure it should be noted that I have an MA in French Literature and Culture.  Part of my thesis dealt with Rousseau's Social Contract, so I'm no stranger to wading through complex syntax.  Words like autodidact that are direct cognates of English aren't a problem, but when she starts talking about rich people's gold-plated cr*p  and how she reads like a rabid dog then I need to reach for my dictionary :P.  It's great to hear that you're enjoying it, I'm feeling inspired to pick it back up again, now!

I put Possession aside and read Started Early, Took My Dog this weekend.  Very enjoyable!  A tad heavy on the coincidences, perhaps, but no more so than many crime novels.  And certainly most informative about Yorkshire!

I'm almost done with a short read of Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo with Lynn Vincent. It's an interesting book and a bit creepy at times, but I made the mistake of reading that Lynn Vincent is the mastermind behind Sarah Palin's Going Rogue and now it's a little tainted for me.

Up next is Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin.
