From the Five Books thread:
I just started Cold Earth by Sarah Moss. It's one of those books where each character gets a chance to speak for a mighty long time, and I'm a bit put off just reading the very first bit so far because the first character (an Englishwoman) has been talking about how annoying are the Americans that she has to work with - she hasn't met them yet, they only just appeared...just stereotypical 'Americans are tiresome because <blah blah blah>' stuff = lazy writing or else the author really wanted to make this character (who otherwise would seem nice enough!) sound like a bigot or something.
I finished this last weekend. It was a quick read & once it finally got suspenseful, it had its gripping parts. But it was too rife with silly stereotypes & never really got beyond them, plus I didn't think the ending was very satisfying. Plus I didn't like the main character, at all - who shared a couple things in common with the author herself, going by the biographical notes.

(some of the less favourable reviews on Amazon - I found to be pretty much spot on!)
Next I have picked up
Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult but have yet to actually start reading it - lol! I'm not sure if I'll like her or not - isn't she considered chick lit? (which I don't usually like) But I thought I'd give it a chance - having to do with the Amish, which I find interesting.
