I am reading Elizabeth George's new book too.
What did you think of it, Woodlily? I have to say, I was a bit disappointed and didn't think it was up to her usual standard. Too many implausible things.
Since then I've read Hans Fallada's
Alone in Berlin which was beautiful, sad, moving, tragic, and altogether wonderful.
And now I'm reading
Private Papers by Margaret Forster which I picked up at a second-hand book sale on the weekend and thought might be a good antidote to the heaviness of Fallada!
