I still cannot get throught The Little Friend. I have promised myself that I would finish it but I am really having a hard time.

I couldn't stand that one either. It was a shame because I loved The Secret History so much and was looking foward to another great read.  >:(

Yeah, I found it really hard going, too. I dislike not finishing books, but I didn't feel like I got anything of interest out of this book by actually reading it all the way through.

Right now I'm finishing up Sex & the Evolution of Human Nature by Matt Ridley. (I'm fulfilling my personal quota of non-fiction! )
I know I'm late - where's the booze?

Funny 'cause I'm really enjoying The Little Friend - I'm about 3/5 through it.  It's a big (long) book but I'm digging it. :)

I'd love to hear any insights you have on it, Carolyn! :D

Well I'm just hoping that what I feel is a reasonably well-told tale doesn't descend into no real payoff at the end.  Thus far, I think the book falls within the purview of southern gothic & I like that.  I suppose it's hard to be completely sure but I think her general depiction (apart from the exact storyline) of impoverished, small-town southern life is spot-on.  (Some of her characters remind me of people I know - hehe.)  Others may disagree though. :)

Just finished two Kellerman books (Twisted and Rage), and Michael Connolly's new one, The Lincoln Lawyer. Good LA mysteries all. Connolly's latest was much better than the last lot of books he's done.

I've just finished Labyrinth by Kate Mosse. It was okay. It took a great deal of willpower to get through the first few chapters because they bored the heck out of me but the story got interesting and ending was quite nice.

I'm now going though a chick lit phase. I want mindless crappy stories to cheer me up. I'm currently reading Louise Bagshawe's Sparkles. The name of the book should tell you that it's mindless. Loving it. :)

I really didn't like Labyrinth. I had to read it for my book club, and I always force myself to finish book club books, but I could not get through this one. I made it to page 400 and then gave up. To me, it read like a Mills & Boone book. Cringe-worthy.  :(

I just finished The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan.  It was an excellent book!  I really enjoy her writing.

Ditto to that!  I love Amy Tan.  She's got a new one out, I've been meaning to see if it's at the library.  It's about travellers in Burma.  The Bonesetter's daughter was very timely for me and my mom as we were in the process of moving my grandma into a home when I had read this book.  She is indeed, a good writer and fantastic storyteller.

Thanks for the recommendation, Kristina. I really loved The Kitchen God's Wife and The Hundred Secret Senses.

I finished Running With Scissors and like most of you, it was hard to believe it was a true story. It was so bizarre! I'm starting "The Island" by Victoria Hislop. I have the worst time picking out books, so I love a site that gives me book recommendations! Thanks everyone!

Let me know how you like it, OK? I have to read it for next month's book club meeting, but I haven't started it yet. I've heard good things, though.

I am now reading Empress Orchid by Anchee Min.  I really enjoy the Asian culture and especially stories about the history of China.  This is an excellent book about a woman who comes from poverty and competes to become one of the Emperor's wives.  I'm not very far into it yet, but I can't put it down!
