Will online US Tax programs work for filing taxes from UK?
« on: February 20, 2012, 08:18:06 PM »
I've been stalking these posts for months now, and it seems a lot of people recomend going to a professional tax expert. I'm overwhelmed, but right now the expensive fee for a professional isn't going to work for our budget.

This would be my first time filing from the UK, and I've only been here since May. Do most online (free or chargable) tax programs let you file from the UK correctly?

In the past I used to use HR Block, and was hoping they had a sister company here to go to. No such luck. I always used to do the EZ forms, as I didn't own my house, no kids, and had minimal investments.

I know paying for prep would put all worries of errors to rest, but with Hubward recently made redundant, every penny counts.

Anyone have program suggestions or even recommend doing it all long hand?

Someone posted a few days ago that TaxAct worked well for them, even allowed to file with an NRA spouse. According to the TaxAct website, it's free for a Federal only return. As you moved to the U.K in May, you really need to think about if you should file an extention so as to take advantage of the foreign earned exclusion. You will already be aware of FBAR filing requirements if appropriate to your circumstances. Remember that your husbands redundancy payment is taxable by the IRS and will need to be reported. I believe that HMRC exempt this type of income up to 30,000 GBP.

H&R Block do have an office in the U.K, but at a U.S airbase.

Hold on, if ziptang's husband is a UK citizen and she files as married filing separately, why would the IRS have any right to tax it?!
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

Correct, they wouldn't. The OP is silent on this though.

But surely it's better to put in that caveat rather than scare the OP into thinking she has an obligation that may not exist.

I don't believe so... The OP is not new to filing, just from the U.K.

It was my intent to file married/separately TBH. I was under the impression you had an extension date for not being in the US?

I need to sit this weekend and find out what forms to research. My us income from jan to April is pretty small, and I always had extra taken out. I'm hoping I made under my previous tax bracket to exempt me from paying extra.

Husband hasn't claimed benifit yet, so even claiming jointly, it wouldn't fall until next tax time.

Is there a good thread for beginner tax info specific to first year of relocation?

You get an automatic two month extention for being overseas. You can file an extention if you need more time.
