In Oxford for 20yrs or so...
« on: February 21, 2012, 11:02:10 AM »
I came to the UK as a military dependant (we were based at Upper Heyford) and have lived in and around Oxford for 20-odd years - in Oxford and Witney and on RAF Croughton...

My husband is a British citizen and I have 4 British-born children so I'll be here for a while yet!

My parents were with the military from before I was born so I have only ever lived 6 years in the USA - I was even born in Germany! - so I don't have a lot of roots there, no home base or anything, hardly know my family who live there.  Even so, I miss it sometimes... and more often as I get older!

I'd love to meet up with Americans nearby.  Or, if that's too scary and cyber-stalky, just chatting with people who live here but are from the US would also be fun!

Hi!  Kent is coming up to 100 miles away so I guess a coffee is out of the question!  :)  So how are you finding Kent?  Do you feel the cultural difference much?  Do you have family with you there?

Anyway, you have a good day, too!  Hope you're getting some of the sunshine we have here today... Spring appears to have sprung!

Yes it does seem a long way to go have a coffee, especially with London in the way   :)  When I came over here we rented a flat in Tunbridge Wells and I hated it.....felt cooped up with no place to go, no garden, no way to go out side and walk, so after the first year we decided to buy.  We live in a Park Home in the Knatts Valley, just outside Otford and Sevenoaks.  I love it here and I have a garden.  We will have been living here a year come the 3rd of March.  Very quiet here and I can look out my kitchen window and watch the horses in the field.  I love that I can hear the birds singing every morning way before the sun comes up.

Kent is ok I guess but then growing up I really never went anyplace outside my comfort zone, in fact the furthest I was ever away from home was the year my mom and step dad took my sister and I to Hawaii for a week, I never did feel comfortable leaving my "home".  Then something magical happened and I met my DH in a game online called Perfect World.  The theme song from that game became our song, and I even made a video on you tube about our life together in the game.

I don't have any family here except my DH.  I have 4 kids, 1 girl (deceased last April) and 3 boys, 15 grand kids, 13 living, 2 great grand kids and 1 due the 1st of May.  I miss them everyday and sometimes wonder why I even left in the first place then I remember why.....because my 4 kids told me that I deserved to be happy in my life after being so unhappy for so many years.  My birthday is coming up in 9 days and I will be 60 years old.  My DH is the best thing that has happened in my life for a long time and he has made me happier in the last 3 years than I have been my whole life.  The cultural differences?  I seem to fit in where ever I am, always try to be helpful to others and never ask for anything in return.  That is my nature.  Someday I shall write a book about my adventures in this life.

As for the sunshine...it was peeking out really well this morning but by afternoon it was overcast again....but I don't mind at all, I rather enjoy the weather here!!!!

Take care.......

Hiya, I know what's it like to be from a military family. My Dad was in the army for over 20 years and we moved around a lot too. Although I must admit in liking the life style as I married a British army officer and we have moved every two years since we have been married in 2000. We were in Shrivenham a few years ago and I must admit I went into Oxford quite often. I love the city. I am currently in Gloucester which is nice but must admit I do miss the states. Well take care.
