Where to live in Glasgow
« on: February 24, 2012, 12:53:31 PM »
Hey guys... I haven't been on here in AGES but I'm looking for a bit of help. Will probably be around a bit more now too because I'm going to be looking to connect with some people when I move!

So, we've been in Carlisle for the past 6 years but we're going to be moving to Glasgow as my husband is going back to university and has been offered a place at the University of Glasgow.

I understand the uni is in the "west end" and it sounds as though the west end may also be a good place to live. Safe there?

What other areas might you suggest I look at for housing?

Can anyone take a look at this link and tell me which parts will be good for looking? http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/search.html?searchLocation=glasgow&useLocationIdentifier=false&locationIdentifier=&rent=To+Rent&topMatchPersistRegIds=93628%2C550&lastPersistLocId=REGION^93628

I'm assuming "Glasgow West" is the west end, right??

Thaaaank you!

The West End is definitely a great part of Glasgow to live in, and ideal if your husband is going to be going to uni there, though it can be pricier than other parts of Glasgow.

Hyndland, (North) Kelvinside, Kelvinbridge, Hillhead, and Kelvingrove are the neighborhoods you'll see cropping up in searches. There is also Partick, which is slightly more affordable.

I was in North Kelvinside right near the Botanics and it is a very safe (and beautiful!) area.

The South Side is also a decent place to live, and less expensive, but there are still a few areas that don't have the nicest reputations. I would stay away from the East End for the most part.

Thanks for your reply!

We're paying £500 a month where we are right now and that's the highest we can go. It's not looking very good when I am searching Rightmove. LOL Seems to get what I have here would be well over £800 a month.

Do you think £500 is doable for the west end??

I lived on Botanic Crescent.   ;D  Loved it!

I'm not sure what you're looking for, but you should be able to find 1 bedrooms for that in Partick or Whiteinch (which is a bit farther along than Partick), or someplace near where I used to live, which was closer to the border of Maryhill rather than the ritzy part of Kelvinside. Granted, they might be smaller flats than what you're maybe used to (again, not sure what you're looking for!  :)), but it should be doable.

I should think you could find it in places around Kelvinbridge as well, since it's a student area. It might take some searching (you might have more luck on Gumtree as well), but I have friends on low budgets who have had no trouble finding something suitable in the West End.

For instance, these are near where I was: 2 Bed Flat, Garrioch Road

1 Bed Flat Queen Margaret Drive

This is near St. George's Cross: 2 Bedroom

Partick: 1 Bedroom

1 Bedroom

Yorkhill/Kelvingrove: 1 Bedroom

I LOVED Botanic Crescent!!!   :D I was on Garrioch Road just past Clouston, so I walked through there everyday. I dream of living in that big house opposite the crescent!

It's good to hear from people who know the area, thanks!

Yes, I did forget to say what we're looking for. My husband is actually a mature student going back to uni. I'm 33 and he's 31 and we have a son so we definitely need two bedrooms and don't really want to get into student housing because we'd prefer calmer neighbors! I'm hoping for a newish built flat because I really favor the open plan living room/kitchen thing. All these separate rooms make me feel too clausterphobic!

We won't be moving up there until this summer but I like to keep looking at properties when I know I'm moving to so I can get an idea of what I'm looking for. So, it's too early to find something right now... just looking. :)

I spent a weekend once with a fellow UKY-er friend who lives in Partick - I thought it was nice around there!  Maybe she'll drop by & add something...

I do wonder if rents will be higher than what you are used to - Glasgow being a bigger city/urban area than the smaller places you are used to living, .shell?

Good luck!

Definitely! It's one of the big downsides to this! We're going to be poorer for these four years, I'm afraid. But it'll pay off in the long run.

This thread was my main reason for re-registering!

Hi Shell.. hope you're well, and I'm excited that you're moving to Glasgow!

I don't know what sort of accommodation you're in at the moment, but it may be that you'll struggle to find like-for-like here at the same price.  :-\\\\

I live at the Thornwood end of Partick... between Partick proper and Whiteinch.  I pay £400 a month for a 2nd floor, 1 bedroom traditional sandstone tenement flat.  I’ve been kind of thinking of moving because my flat has no central heating, draughty old windows, and a ridiculously tiny and badly designed kitchen.  But I’ve been disappointed to realise that I can’t find anything in my price range that’s any better than what I’ve already got.

For your budget of £500, you’ll be able to find a nice flat in Partick, near the University, with central heating and double-glazing (!), but it will probably only be 1 bedroom… not sure if you’re looking for 2 bedrooms or not?

You’ll find rents cheaper as you go west along the Dumbarton Road, but you’ll also find quality of life diminishes out there… Whiteinch is probably the furthest west I would be willing to live.  There are some gorgeous villas and cottages in Scotstoun, but you’d then be getting too close to Yoker and Clydebank for my liking.

These are just my personal opinions, of course… but I wouldn’t live anywhere in the East End (unless you count the Merchant City as east end!) and I also would not want to live on the South Side.  There are some really nice places down there (and some brilliant Asian restaurants!), but for me personally, it’s too far away from town, and the bus service isn’t that great.  I have spent too many nights stood freezing at bus stops in Govanhill and Shawlands watching buses go by with ‘Sorry I’m Not In Service’ across the front.  I reckon it would be too far away from the University for you as well.

Saying that, though... I'm headed for the south side now (a really old-fashioned old mans pub has just started serving real ale, so we are going to check it out!), so I will stop rabbiting.  Happy flat hunting, and if you need any help or tips, just ask!

Aaargh, I keep thinking of things... here are a few links for rental properties:

http://www.countrywidescotland.co.uk/rent/

http://www.fineholm.co.uk/Property-for-Rent/

http://www.gspc.co.uk/rentals/

I'd search under 'west end', 'Glasgow west', 'Charing Cross', 'Partick', 'Thornwood', 'City Centre', for a start... Dowanhill, Hyndland, Hillhead, Broomhill, Kelvinside, etc might be more expensive, but worth a try.
