Rent car in UK & Drop off in France?

Has anyone had the experience of hiring a car/van here in the UK and dropping it off in another European country or vice versa?  My partner and I are moving to Paris in September and think it might be easier just to hire a van here in Northern Ireland and drive rather than shipping everything and the cat (which apparently you can't do from NI because there isn't a big enough airport!).  I've tried looking at rental companies' websites, but not much is coming up when I try to get a quote.

I would very much doubt it.

I looked into hiring a car from Paris to London one way when I brought my dog in via France, but I couldn't find any rental companies that would allow it. Apparently, it's because they would be stuck with a car in their fleet that would have the steering wheel on the wrong side.

My friend did the same thing with her dog and it they wouldn't do it.  This was the summer of '10.
