I know there was a time when landlords in the US thought the sight of laundry hanging outside was unseemly (though I disagree), but I'd have assumed that by 2012 the importance of saving costs, saving energy, etc. would have prevailed. I do know that if my landlord felt that way, I'd have something to say about it. But then I've always been mouthy.  ;)

The historic town nearby (which I used to work in) has all kinds of rules about the appearance of people's houses. One of them is no clothes lines because it is "unsightly". There are a lot of Victorian homes as well, and the people that own them have to keep them nicely painted. I think they may even need approval from the town for colours.  ::)

The painting thing doesn't actually bother me as much as the laundry. I mean, if you're going to repaint your house it doesn't cost you any more to paint it colour X than it does colour Y. I probably would find it a bit of an annoyance personally, but I wouldn't really mind. Providence (where I lived) had areas with those rules too.

But not putting your laundry outside to dry is expensive and has a real environmental impact. I can't imagine any valid reason in this day and age for such a rule.

We have the same rule were I live.  No washing hanging up, no this, no that.  In fact the only unsightly thing is all the signs around telling people what they can't do...

I hate seeing my neighours washing outside...now all I can think about when I am gabbing with the wife is what her husbands underwear look like. Shudder.

I like it! It's good for the environment.  There is something nicely domestic about it for me and the clothes smell better, IMO! I especially love the lines at the front of Victorian terraces that cross the streets a la Coronation street. Cat preferred, but not required.

I would like more than the one tiny line we have..... :-\\\\

The condos in my town prohibit washing lines and also are restrictive on what decor you display outside. One complex even prohibiting someone from displaying the U.S. flag!! But our town is really annoying anyway because we don't even have trash collection (because the streets would be messy with all the bins on the sidewalks!) so I have to pay $170 per year for the privilege of hauling my own trash to the dump (on top of hefty real estate tax)  >:(
I'm off to hang my laundry outside  ;)
