Provolone cheese at Morrisons
« on: March 11, 2012, 05:24:59 PM »
I got a bit excited at seeing Provolone cheese in Morrisons the other day, especially as I have looked for it in proper cheese shops and have never been able to find it.

But... maybe I am the only one who didn't know this?  Provolone comes in 2 different varieties... Piccante and Dolce.  The stuff I bought from Morrisons was the Piccante type, and I guess the type I grew up eating in the US was the Dolce type, because the Morrison's stuff was BEYOND grim and nothing like what I remembered provolone to be!

From Wikipedia:
Quote
Provolone Piccante (piquant), aged for a minimum of four months and with a very sharp taste, to Provolone Dolce (sweet) with a very mild taste. In Provolone Piccante, the distinctive piquant taste is produced with lipase (enzyme) derived from goat. The Dolce version uses calf's lipase instead.

So... learn from my mistake, guys!  ;)

You can get both in the US. I love the piccante type!

I think Edam is real close to Provolone. It's what I tend to use and I really like it.

Thanks for that...DW was looking for it for ages. We eventually got some at a farmers market in our town, and she froze some of it. now if she could get American cheese she'd be happy (I couldn't care less....apart from it making her happy!)

good American cheese

Isn't that an oxymoron?  ;)

Actually, isn't "American cheese" on its own an oxymoron?!?

That is kind of awesome. I do miss good American cheese, the kind you get from the deli.

You'll be expecting a joke about this from me too  ;) , but genuinely... I don't know what type of cheese you mean.
Isn't the cheese here like a hundred times better?  (apart from not being able to find provalone dolce!)

In either Lidl or Aldi i saw processed cheese slices that *reminded* me of Kraft singles (American cheese).  I didn't buy it, but if that's what she's looking for, it might be worth a try?

There is good American cheese. The stuff they slice for you at the deli is completely different from that substance wrapped in plastic. *shudder* It's the only cheese you can use to make a grilled cheese! Anything else is the wrong texture and taste!

I'm not a huge cheese person. I do think the cheddar here is far tastier, but it is not a substitute for American cheese!

Is that what it's actually called?  American Cheese?
I've definitely never seen that ... the only American cheese I was aware of were the >>shudder<<  processed slices.

It is called American Cheese, but it's not technically cheese as far as I know. Processed to within an inch of its life.

It's the only cheese you can use to make a grilled cheese! Anything else is the wrong texture and taste!

Have you tried a really good strong English cheddar?

Yes, I don't like strong cheese. I don't like most cheese!

Yes, and it is creamy and delicious. Maybe not good for cheese snobs. ;) But the only way to have a childhood memory inducing grilled cheese.

They do make mild cheddar as well. I'm partial to strong, but I can understand you not liking it if you're not really a cheese person.
