US passport renewal in the UK
« on: March 20, 2012, 01:32:57 PM »
Has anyone else had trouble with a U.S. passport renewal in the UK?
Mine has passed the alloted time they say it takes and I've had no response from the Embassy who I've tried contacting numerous times by both phone and email.
We fly home to deal with family matters in less than 2 weeks now - am getting very stressed!

Yes I got my US passport renewed via London Embassy recently.
I sent it via courier service on February 1st. I planned to travel 3 weeks later and stated it on the application.
After about 2 weeks I got a call from the embassy. They said, "Oh, we've noticed you are going to travel soon but we've just opened your application." So basically the application just sat there for 2 weeks. Then after talking to me they expedited the processing but still I only received the passport after 4 weeks. I checked status of the application (https://passportstatus.state.gov/opss/OPSS_Status_ip.asp) in the meanwhile so I know it was sitting in the mailroom at the embassy for another week or so. I also applied for a passport card and still have not received 7 weeks later (!!!), embassy folks say it's coming...
BTW expedited passport processing stateside currently takes 1 week.
I think the embassy switched to British service standards ;)
here's a tip: you probably paid with a credit card, see if it has been charged. Then see what the above passport status link says.
You can also contact them at the embassy at londonpassports@state.gov. Phoning them did not work out for me.
Best of luck!

Ugh!  They'll have had mine 5 weeks tomorrow.  I gave myself a window of 6 1/2 weeks to avoid any problem and I still may not get it in time.   :o
I did finally get ahold of someone today at the Embassy, but she could only say it has been issued but has not been sent here from the U.S. yet.
I've emailed 3 times over the last 2 1/2 weeks to the same e-mail address that you suggested and have never received a reply other than the automated response saying they've received my email.
The other link to check the status doesn't recognise my info at all!  That's worrying!
Cheers for sharing your experience.
fingers crossed.....

It must have gotten much worse lately. I did mine in July 2010 and the new passports were back exactly one week later.

I did mine in January 2011 and it came back really quickly! Sorry to hear you're having issues.

I got my daughter's back in 2.5 weeks and that was over the Christmas holidays this year.  I don't know why it would change so much.
