One more Citizenship ?/advice
« on: March 20, 2012, 04:08:07 PM »
Just wanted to ask for some advice on this one? I originally planned to get me and my older 2 children our citizenship done on april the 5th.  They cost would be + £1600, which is a lot of money for us atm.  We could swing it painfully on credit cards if need be.
One question I have is, is there any problem waiting a few months to go back and get my children citizenship? or should it be done with mine?
Another question is, My mom and husband think I shouldn't get them citizenship at all?!?  Thoughts are if we ever return to the US they likelihood of them ever returning would be nil.
I disagree, cuz if we did return by chance and hubby hated the US...or whatever, I hate the thought of my kids not coming back with me, or restarting the process all over for them.
So really for me personally just wonder should I to wait to save up the money for 3/6 months and get the kids citizenship or bite the bullet now?  Love to hear thoughts and advice!

Why not just wait a few months and get everyone citizenship at the same time? Is there a reason why you need to apply for yourself right away? Citizenship isn't like another visa-you don't have to apply as soon as you're eligible. Fees aren't going up by a lot in April, only a couple of percentage points. In the short term, citizenship doesn't give you anything that ILR doesn't. Of course, it's definitely worth doing sooner than later but there's no crazy rush.

We've already paid 50.00 checking service fee, don't want to waste that. :) Very ready to get the immigration process chapter done and dusted.

My main concern is there any drawbacks to not doing my kiddos at the same time?  I'm leaning more toward just doing them anyways, but hubby doesn't think we can swing everyone's immigration plus trip for mom's birthday party.

I'm not understanding the part about them returning to the US being nil... I'm assuming (please correct me if I'm wrong) you are American and moved to the UK? There would be nothing nil about returning to the US after they take UK citizenship, you don't HAVE to renounce your American citizenship in order to have British. So when they fly back to the US they can use their American passport.

Ah, nevermind, I reread your original post. *shrugs* i would still get them anyway - even if they never return they can have it.

It is much more easier to do it all at once as right now you would just have to register them as a British Citizen on the MN1 form. If you wait and they turn 18 then they have to qualify under then 'Standard Requirements' for Naturalisation.

Right now your AN form is £836 and for two children on an MN1 application is only £810. If you wait too long and they turn 18 then you'll be looking at upwards of £1,000 EACH to Naturalise plus meeting the Naturalisation Requirements.

It's really much easier to do now and not have to worry about it at all in the future as you never know what will happen down the line and you may have to return to the US with your children and if they're gone more than 2 years their ILR will lapse and you're looking at then potential of them being over 18 and if as a family you want to return to the UK they won't be able to go with you unless they qualify for a visa on their own merits.

Much easier to just do it now. Yes it's expensive but you're securing you & your childrens future that way and making their lives a lot less complicated if unforseen events should happen. Plus it's only going to get MORE expensive the longer you wait.

One more question please, also on MN1 it says requires both parents signitures, Am i reading guide properly when it says, only one parent required being divorced?

I have paperwork from my X, and signed by him in front of notary stating he allowed us to travel to England with intentions of the children seeking citizenship.

Hopefully I'm reading that right, that one parent can sign when divorced?

There are 2 fee increses each year, normally being Mid April and Mid October. So you'll pay more if you wait.

Yep

Not sure about your other question. You can always call Liverpool Contact Centre on 0845 010 5200 and ask.
