Proof of ties, is this enough?
« on: March 23, 2012, 09:09:31 PM »
Ok, so I'm a paranoid person and I'm traveling in May to England to visit my SO. I just want to know if this list of ties is enough or if I can scrounge up any more things as proof that I'll return home.

I'll be staying 3 weeks, with my boyfriend. Should I have a note from him or his parents (he's 25) that he will pay for my expenses while there? I'll only have about $1,000, maybe a bit more, in the bank after I go ahead and buy the plane ticket. I'm also going to be taking classes and I have an important test in June that I have to return for. Should I get documentation for this?

I don't have any bills besides my phone bill. =/ Also, my grandmother booked a cruise later this year for myself, my brother and herself. My aunt and a few other relatives are joining us. She spent about $2,000 on the booking and my life would be over if I didn't return for how much she just spent on me. So, I have the proof that I will be on that ship later this year since I printed out the booking.

Is this enough for a 3 week stay with my boyfriend? I could always set up some volunteering on top of it all to come back to as well, since I always enjoyed that. Please let me know if there is anything I can add to this list? I do have many people that I'm close to, my cousins are both pregnant and I want to be home for their children's births, and meetings that I attend at home, but I'm unsure how to document this. Am I overreacting? Or not? :/

Do you have a return ticket? For such a short visit, that should be proof of ties back.

Are you employed in the States? If so, you could get a letter from your employer stating that you need to be back to work by a certain date.

Oh I wouldn't even plan on going if I didn't have a return ticket. I am not currently employed, but I am taking steps to further my education. Thanks for the reply!

I just went through Heathrow about a month ago to visit my boyfriend that I had never met in person before for three weeks. All they did was ask 'Here for a visit?'. I said 'yes' and she let me right through without asking anything else. I smiled as I approached her and I was dressed like a business woman. Just giving you my experience since there are a lot of horror stories about it on here.

Are you kidding me? Wow. I guess it REALLY all depends on who you get. That is my dream IO. Oh I know they have horror stories, that's why I am hell bent on making sure I bring enough proof with me. Did you have any documentation with you just in case or..?

I had a bank statement and a note from my mother saying that I help take care of my elderly grandmother. I'm going back in late May for about 2 months and I'm bringing the same stuff again just in case. I plan on dressing up again also. I think looking confident has a lot to do with it. If you look nervous they are going to suspect you of something. I was going through to Guernsey and my boyfriend thinks that's why I got light treatment. The island has its own border control. Didn't get stopped at all when I arrived there.

I'm bringing everything I can possibly think of as a tie to the US. Even my gym membership that I have, lol. I think that is one of my largest issues is I get so nervous and it is pretty obvious. I have no idea how to seem like I'm not nervous when I am. I kinda wear my emotions on my sleeve and it's not particularly a good thing in this kind of situation. However, I think I will try what you said. Dress to impress and (attempt) confidence. I'm going through Boston>Dublin>London. Dunno if that makes any difference to how I'll be treated.

I don't think that there is immigration between Dublin and London.

You won't see UK immigration at all on that route.  Take your documents anyway but don't worry!

Surely there has to be Irish immigration though, right? O__o

ETA:   :P ;) Obviously, my brain is not functioning as it should.  I mean, when people were referencing Dublin/London immigration.

I forgot about the CTA. I'm sorry if this is a bit of a n00b question but what does ETA stand for?

Don't panic. Just be prepared (you are already gathering documentation showing ties, so it sounds like you are). Approach the immigration officer confidently and answer their questions honestly.

I entered the UK four times to see my fiance before I entered on a fiancee visa earlier this month. Each time I brought an enrollment verification form from my university, a sealed copy of my academic transcript and my schedule, a few pay stubs, a bank statement and a copy of my return ticket. I was never asked to produce any of it. They always took my word for it. The first time I entered, there was a bit more questioning because I think the IO seemed concerned that it was my first time visiting DF and that our relationship had largely been based on two years of instant messaging, but he stamped my passport once he found out that we actually had met in person. Other than that, I've never spent more than 30 seconds talking to the IO.

Yes, there are tons of horror stories because people always share horror stories. It wouldn't be interesting if everyone shared stories like mine because nothing of note happened. While there are no guarantees, I'd be surprised if they bounced you.

I hope you have a good trip. Are you from the Boston area?

Thanks!

I hope you have a good trip. Are you from the Boston area?

Thanks so much your post really has calmed me down a bit. I'm not from Boston, I'm from Rochester, NY. But Boston is the only place I've found that goes from Dublin to Heathrow. I'm kinda excited since I've always wanted to go to Boston anyways. I agree, my first trip there was a bit of a horror story but nonetheless I got through and I think it was because I was completely unprepared that I was stopped.

Anywho! I am in my 20's and I'm just nervous that they'll see the red flags, young girl + English boyfriend and that's all they'll have to hear before they cart my butt home. There's the paranoia talking. Even though I apparently won't be going through UK immigration I still want to be able to back up my story that I WILL be going home. I'm trying to get all the necessary documents, right now all I have is the proof that the cruise is booked and that I'll be on the ship. I'm trying to scrounge up as much evidence I can get. I've known my SO for 7 years, and we've met up 3 times, I'm praying I get no trouble!
