From SoCal to the Highlands
« on: March 24, 2012, 04:51:39 PM »
Hi,
I moved 4 years ago this summer from the hot and sunny Inland Empire (east of LA) to the cold and grey Scottish Highlands. I'm here on indefinite leave to remain after procuring a spouse visa almost 2 years ago.
I met another American at The Body Shop and she told me about this forum, so I joined up! I'm really glad that I found this place, because it's been hard putting my feelings to words about how out-of-place I feel, and how homesick I get sometimes. Not knowing what I'm going through, my husband does his best, but honestly he doesn't know what to say or do most times when I'm like that. Although he once made the extreme effort of learning how to make homemade "In-N-Out" style burgers, so he's not entirely helpless!  ;)
All in all, life isn't so bad. I just miss my family, especially since my siblings are all starting families right about now and I'm not there to see it.
Hopefully, in some years we'll be moving back to the US, but only time will tell. In the meantime, though, it'll be really nice having people to relate to! xxx

'Inland Empire'!!
Good grief, it's a LONG time since I heard that term!

Anyway, I'm from 'there' as well... I grew up in Norco... you probably know where that is and can relate to why I'm so happy to not live there anymore!  ;)

Hi!  I used to live in Hemet and Murrieta.  Welcome to UKY!

Lol sorry, sometimes it takes me a while before I can respond (doctors, work, etc.), but thank you for the welcome! So nice to hear some familiar cities. I'm from Rancho Cucamonga, myself, but I've been to the places you both mentioned. Sometimes I dream about going back home and living there, but then I remember what it was like and...yeah, no thanks! I think I miss family and friends more than I do where I lived, so every once in a while I have to remind myself that it'd probably be worse there!

Hey there! NoCal person here. :) Will your husband teach me to make In-N-Out burgers, please? My husband and I miss them so much.

Inverness is lovely, but such a change from LA's climate! Did you get snow this week? We had some that didn't stick in Edinburgh ...

Nice to meet you.

Welcome to UKY newcomers. :)

I love hearing all these place names! Over the years I have lived in Pedley, (Riverside) [smiley=puke.gif], Ontario, Chino Hills and Running Springs. Attended Chaffey College and Loma Linda University many many moons ago. I've only been here 6 years but it feels like forever lol.

I miss the sunshine but I doubt I could live there again. I think if I had to go home I would choose northern CA.
