One way or round trip tickets?
« on: September 22, 2004, 06:42:00 PM »
When we make the move should we get one way tickets for 4, or should we get round trip as they are cheaper? Would immigration have a problem with this? We'd be going to settle. I would be the only one with paperwork as husband and kids will have UK passports.

If you can get supersaver round trip tickets then do it but just dont tell the ticket/travel agent you intend to throw the return away otherwise they will refuse to sell to you. Also be aware that supersavers are very restricted and shouldnt be used unless you are certain of your travel dates otherwise it could cost you a fortune in change fees. Some supersavers are not even changeable and NONE are transferrable so be careful when using them. If you are unsure of the fare rules then ask the agent. Its their job to tell you. When I was at American Airlines and United as well it was mandatory we explain the fair rules to the customer. I dont know if they do that here.
Dont know about the immigration stuff...sorry
best of luck

I don't know how immigration will view it, I would think that since you'll have a settlement visa that it wouldn't be a problem. I'm planning on buying a one-way ticket when I come over on my fiance visa in November. I'm buying mine from 1-800 Fly Europe (www.1800flyeurope.com) where I can get a one-way from St. Louis to Gatwick for $245.00 including taxes and fees. I've used them for both of my trips over to England and the staff was always very helpful. It might be worth looking at them for better ticket prices.

With a settlement Visa, the decision to allow you entry will have been made prior to your travel, so the Immigration Officer at the UK entry point won't have any thought of sending you back.  Besides - what on earth would possess him to ask to see your travel tickets in this circumstance?

Can I (again) suggest www.skyauction.com for one-way tickets (on Virgin)?  I've had great experiences with them (posted in other threads in this section).

Yes, Peedal ... you're very welcome to post links from previous threads where relevant into newer threads.

I'm very conscious that the "newspaper" nature of a board such as this means that a lot of good information that's posted rapidly gets pushed down into old, out-of-date pages that aren't naturally found by newer members, so it's a fact of life that the same  questions (thus answers) will tend to repeat themselves.

I'm not going to speak for other moderators, but the Travel board is relatively quiet, and routes and deals do change, so I'm going to actively encourage any topic even if it was raised just a short while ago, and I'm going to do so in preference to telling people to read 10 pages back  ;)

I've come over to settle for at least the next two year - and I had a return ticket.  It's not a problem as you could be going back for a visit home again (knowing that tickets seem to be cheaper if you are coming from and back to the US) and be buying your return to the UK later.
