Where to live near Samlesbury?
« on: April 04, 2012, 04:05:06 PM »
My husband is considering taking a job in Samlesbury but I am having a very hard time finding anything in that town. Is Preston a good place to live with kids or do I need to be looking more towards Manchester? We have 4 daughters so I want a place that they will be happy  :)

I lived in the Preston area a few years back, and I found it a wonderful place. We lived in Leyland, which is just on the south side of Preston, nearer to Chorley. That's an easy commute to Samlesbury by the way.

I would definitely recommend taking a really good look at Lancashire before heading south to Manchester (which I also love, but a city is a city, and Preston is more 'manageable').

Lancashire folk are among the best; they take you as they find you, and I made many friends there.
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

Hi

You've not provided enough information to give a good reply to.

You mention you have a hard time finding anything in that town - what is it you are looking for ?

Is Preston a good place to live with kids - how do you define what actually is 'good' for you and your requirements?

You have 4 daughters so a place they'll be happy - what kinds of things make them happy? will they all agree? what happens if one or two don't find thing's they're interested in close by ?

In short, you'll need to provide more information on a higher level to start with. What's the realistic income level you will have as a family after mandatory costs of living have been covered? will your budget stretch to renting or perhaps buying a what I suspect will need to be a 5 bedroom house? will you be also working perhaps?

So lots of factors, however I would say that chances are you should find pretty much everything you'd need in or around Preston as well as having Manchester close by.

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Sorry for the vague post! I have found Samlesbury Hall in Samlesbury and that is about it. I can't even find the town on a map very often. Is it a really small town? I have not found any houses to rent there so I am assuming I should look in other directions.

A good place for kids , in my opinion, would be an area that is family friendly, low crime, good schools and a sense of community.

Only my husband will be working and we will have a budget of 65k in pounds. Is that a realistic number to work with for that area of the country? We are thinking we would like to be more out in the country then in a big city.
