There are a few legitimate websites that offer free gifts of high value in return for trying a number of sponsor products. This may involve free trials, small purchases and memberships. In return, these promotional companies get paid each time a new member signs up for sponsor products and the member gets a "free" gift. You may have seen online ads for "Get a free iPad" or "Get a Free Laptop". The gift is not entirely free, it's just part of the costs of doing the promo.
I have recently completed one of these promotions for an iPad 2 and $250 gift card. I had to get my bank to sign a W9 form and notarize the redemption voucher.
I am not encouraging anyone to do these offers - you must have an eye for detail and you must follow the terms and conditions to the letter.
We hope to move to the UK sometime this year, and because the product will be less than 6 months old at the time we go over, will I have to declare the value of the "gift? Is VAT and customs likely to be assessed on a product I did not purchase?
