Where do you store your eggs?
« on: April 18, 2012, 08:51:50 PM »
Ok so we've been here for a little while now and out of habit I put our eggs in the fridge.  I know that they would be fine left out but was curious what others do.  Do you leave them in the container, put them in a basket, or something else?  Our counter space is tight so just leaving them in what they come in won't work for us but we do have a larger fridge so space in there isn't an issue.

Also- just a side thought-how long will they last for if they are left out?

Thanks

I keep mine in the fridge out of habit.  :)

We leave ours out, sometimes for a week or more.  They've never gone off yet :)

I leave mine out sat on top of the ventilation hood over the hob, but pay close attention to the use by date.  If it's more than 1 day out of date, they go in the compost bin.

Since coming over here, we leave ours out. We have them up in the cupboard away from any heat source. And I have used them past their use by date and never had an issue.

I leave them out as I need them at room temp for baking. They never last that long in this house anyway! :)

Room temperature & often past their sell by date!  I just give 'em a sniff when I crack them usually.

However, if they're very much past the date then I do the 'egg in water' test...put the egg into a cup of water, if it sinks - it's ok!  If it floats, it's rotten.  (Rotten builds up extra gas inside the shell, I believe, which accounts for it floating.)

I wasn't sure whether to really believe that or not, but I had a floater awhile back...heeee!  So it's true!  :)

We sometimes have them awhile because I'm the only egg eater in the household & unless we're baking - well they might sit a bit longer.

Our room temperature is usually on the cool side - if it were hotter, then I'd probably refrigerate them.

Same.  I keep them in the fridge, but only because I have almost no worktop space for them... there's more room in the fridge.

Fridge.  I think they can get a bit more sulphury at room temp, and I can keep them past the sell-by in the fridge.  They age many times faster at room temp than refrigerated.

In a pretty bowl on the worktop. I always put them in the bowl and recycle the carton straightaway as soon as I buy them, so I never know when the sell-by date is. We just eat them when we eat them. They're always fine.

That's a great idea!  I think I'll get an egg bowl.

Since moving here, we keep them on the counter away from the cooker at ambient room temperature.  We don't have a particularly pretty egg bowl, but we do have one and recycle the cartons.  I can't remember the last time we looked at a "sell by" or "use by" date and we've been fine.  We do the sniff method if we're unsure.  ;)

Mine's not a proper egg bowl (thought I love those!) - it's just a pretty Johnson Bros Goldendawn bowl I picked up at a car boot sale once, and it's the perfect size for a dozen eggs.

It's not really the gas building up inside that makes them bad, it's more that if the shell has become porous enough for gas to enter, then it's porous enough for bacteria and other baddies to enter. I rely heavily on the floater test; we don't eat eggs quickly, and they always seem to be past the use-by date. But they last well past it.

When I first moved here, I unpacked some eggs from the shopping and put them in the fridge. The next day, I was complaining to my husband that a housemate must have eaten our eggs, because they'd disappeared and we'd not used them. It turned  out DH had moved them to the cupboard. Before that, I'd never even considered any other option than keeping eggs cold. I still can't quite get used to keeping them in the cupboard, but I'll get there eventually. ;D

Same, we go through eggs like crazy, and I leave them on the counter. I just eat them whever, if I open them and I don't like the way they look, I just throw them away..

On an aside...last year I bought a 15 pack of eggs at Morrisons and they all had double yolks. How nuts is that?
