Anyone else hooked on Scandanavian dramas?
« on: April 20, 2012, 03:22:02 PM »
The Killing, Borgen, Those Who Kill - all excellent series, these are all Danish and we've been hooked since we saw the first episode of The Killing.
There's a new series starts this Sat on BBC4 called The Bridge - Danish/Swedish co-production.
Just wondered if anyone else is hooked on the excellent drama coming out of Scandanavia. It's just so dark, well-written, great storylines.
I got started on it by reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo books, though DW has only seen the films.

It's just so dark,

This is why I steer clear of anything Scandinavian. Sorry.  ;)

(But I don't think The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was dark - that was just bad.)

Thanks for the heads up on that one, I hadn't heard about it! Set to record now!

I love the dark, yet quite realistic, Scandinavian dramas. Excellent stuff, and quite the antidote to the fluffy blandness of much of mainstream tv!

I thought the first series of The Killing was loads better than the second one.

We are watching Those Who Kill, but I can't say that I love it.

Agree first series of "The Killing" was loads better.
Disappointed to learn that they cancelled "Those Who Kill" - thought it was brilliant.
We are considering a trip to Copenhagen now....god knows why with all the crime there!  ;D

The first series of The Killing was better than the second, I thought, but the third will be the last.  :(

The jumper actually made me homesick for Canada, as there are some First Nations style jumpers that are similar (I have a brown one with animals on it).

Nice to see some people from The Killing series one in Borgen. I was a bit slow to warm on Borgen, as the characters seemed to get off to a clunky start to me, but I have warmed to it. I liked the spin doctor kid.

Lillyhammer and Sebastian Bergman have also been purchased by BBC4:

Loved the Icelandic comedy, Night Shift last year on BBC4:

Starring the real Mayor of Reykjavik, who is, of course, also in a punk band!  :P

I am reading the second book in the Millennium series at the moment and I have only seen the first (Swedish) film. The US remake doesn't interest me. Especially after watching the American remake of The Killing. What is wrong with reading subtitles?  ???

Some writers recommended by my Swedish teacher:

The classic 1960s stuff is the Martin Beck series by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo
Liza Marklund (Swedish)
Arnaldur Indridason (Icelandic)
Asa Larsson (Swedish)

I kinda get the darkness & crime - vast expanses of land, isolation, extremes of light and dark and battling against the land for survival in harsh places - cabin fever....

We are planning to go to Iceland in December and really hoping for a 10 day stretch this summer where we can go to Sweden and Denmark!  :)

Have taped The Bridge and will let it stack a bit, as I can get impatient waiting for the next one..... :P

Can I get a copy from you? I seem to have missed this one.

Yes, I loved The Killing but agree that the first series was better.  I liked Borgen also and I wasn't expecting to.  I love that the real Danish prime minister is getting impatient with all the comparisons to Borgen...but there are some similarities.  :D  We've just started watching a backlog of The Bridge.

We have to go on a flight to Japan next month, and archived The Bridge for the trip over.

But hands up, I loved the second season of The Killing. Not the Lund part, but the Prime Minister section was brilliant, and for once, the timelines made sense!

this was recommended to me, but haven't seen them, but a procedural, Irene Huss, made by the same production company, Yellow Bird, that made the Larsson movies.

When you're Nordic outed, then move to the French procedural Spiral and a newer one Braquo.
