Almond milk and Whole Foods London
« on: April 30, 2012, 03:01:34 AM »
I've been into the WF in Kensington a few times, but I didn't notice if they have almond milk. Does anyone shop there who can check? I don't even drink regular milk anymore, so I'm hoping I can get it there! (WF has their own version here in the US, so I was thinking maybe they have it there?) I saw some at some tiny "organic" type health food store in Soho, but it was PRICEY.

There was another product I wanted to ask about, but I can't remember it at the moment.  ???

Thanks for any help!

A quick Google says that both Tesco and Holland & Barrett sell it. I've never actually looked for it, so it's possible you'd need to have a larger Tesco - the smaller ones might not have it.

I've never seen it at my big Tesco, but it is at Holland & Barrett, Whole Foods and at some smaller health food chains like As Nature Intended.

I like almond milk but it is pricey so we use rice milk instead.

I think Tesco just started carrying it, but I'm sure they will stop in about 2 months.  ;)

And Sainsbury's and Asda too, if Google is correct. It doesn't look as if you'll have any problems finding it at all, Beth!  :)

Yes they have it, not sure about the price though, everything in WF is pretty expensive, they do carry the WF365 brand so you might get lucky :) But yeah waitrose carries hazelnut and almond milk now :)

I've seen almond milk in Sainsburys... as well as rice milk, oat milk, and coconut milk (the drinking kind in a tetrapak carton, not the cooking kind in a tin).

everything in WF is pretty expensive

I think I have made the decision never to go into WF again, after being asked to pay £14.99 for FOUR MEASLY SLICES of rare roast beef in WF on Saturday.  They can bite me.

Yeah, I pretty much feel the same way! I'm definitely one to pay a fortune for ingredients but WF does take the Michael on certain things. One thing is they often put their dry aged bone in T-bones steaks to half price, making them about £7 each and they're beyond delicious. You only need one for two of you unless you're a major glutton.

Anything from their salad/pre-prepared counter is extortionate!

(Also their free-range organic Turkeys are amazing!)

Really? I know that there's a WF premium on some things sometimes but I really love their prepared food for a quick lunch in New York/elsewhere in the US! It's not cheap but it's not more expensive than grabbing a subpar unhealthy sandwich/other fast food type thing and it's definitely healthier and usually tastier. It's disappointing to hear that it's not such a good deal in London.

I used to live in the ghetto in Brooklyn but in a part that was starting to gentrify. So my local (teeny tiny 4 aisle) supermarket carried things like soy milk, whole grain pasta and other stuff targeted at the new white hipster population but their mark up was ridiculous. I used to take 2 trains to get to WH because it was actually much cheaper than buying my soy milk et al at my local store. Now, if I had wanted to live on Kraft dinners, frozen pizza, sugary cereals and so forth, I would have been better off locally....

Seriously, I think nothing of popping to Lima's italian deli and dropping a tenner on olives or £20 on cheese at Neal's Yard, and the pre-prepared counter at WF Ken is still pretty eye watering! I got a small amount of salad in the small box there for lunch one time and it was £8, I really don't eat much, so I'm pretty sure it's the price/lb which is just really high. Maybe the one in picadilly is cheaper, I've only ever been to HSK.

£6-£7 for a pre-packaged sandwich is expensive even by London standards and just not good value compared to other places around, Lima's italian deli will shave a piece of proscuttio from a ham in front of you and make you a sandwich for less than that.  You can get a bahn-mi made with grilled fresh meats/tofu and veggies for a fiver or a big bowl of ramen or pho for £6.

That does sound a bit more expensive than the US. I can usually get a good, filling, nutritious meal for $8-10, which is about what you'd pay for a sandwich or whatever somewhere else. And I'd rather have a stirfry or something from WH with veggies and tofu than a sandwich on white bread with cheese and not many veggies somewhere else (being a vegetarian also makes WH more attractive).

I worked at WF Giffnock (outside Glasgow) for a short time, and I couldn't begin to count the number of times people came to the tills with the little brown boxes of salad bar stuff and were either shocked at the price when I scanned it through, or completely refused to take it once they knew the price.

That's what happened to me on Saturday... 4 slices of ginger-marinated pinkishly-rare roast beef came to £14.99 when the girl at the prepared foods bit weighed it.  I apologised for wasting her time, but said that was completely out of my price range, and she nodded in an 'i understand' way.

I think that's the brand that my son found in the local health food shop. He liked it better than the kind he's used to in the States -- more like marzipan! Expensive though  :P

Wow, thanks everyone! I've been so busy today, that I haven't had time to check in till now! I've looked at larger Sainos and Tescos and hadn't found almond milk before. I didn't think to try Waitrose since to me, it sort of seems the UK version of WF (at least posh/price-wise!) I drink milk, but honestly, I just really prefer almond milk on my cereal and to drink now!

I hardly ever shop at WF here in the US because of the cost. I remember the first time I went to WF Ken and got some of their salad bar stuff to have for a picnic. Yeah.. expensive! But, I find that the US one is pretty pricey, too. I guess if this is the only (well one of the only) thing I splurge on it's not so bad. At least Quorn products are all over most supermarkets. I find food in the UK to be much cheaper than the US (Someone explained that it is more subsidised there), so it's a tradeoff. :)
