Is this crazy? Hangers!
« on: May 12, 2012, 05:12:26 AM »
So over the past couple of years, every time I make a trip over to the UK I leave hangers behind. I HATE the hangers my fiancee has in his closet! Tonight while packing the "extra" bag he will take home with him I squirreled away more of my favorite hangers. Am I being a little crazy about this? Am I trying to exert some control over my future? What kind of nuttiness is this? I hate to buy all new hangers in the UK because quite frankly, I have a particular type of hanger that I like and I don't think they have them over there. I suppose I could leave the hangers out and squeeze in say, a winter coat or something. But the hangers make me happy. And I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Thoughts?

Jan 2010: he invited me to the UK by saying "get your ars* on a plane!"
May 2010: I arrive in UK for visit.
April 2011: ask him to marry me.

It's a little crazy but not really more so than hoarding Ranch dressing packets or whatever. It's the little comforts and all. :) What kind of hangers/what makes them so special? Are you sure you can't get them there?

Absolute insanity says the woman who squirrels away several sticks of deodorant, anything cinnamon she can find, and as many Peeps as will fit in her suitcase when returning from each visit to the States.  ;D

The way I see it, if they make you happy and it is something you will definitely use here, it isn't crazy at all. I never have cared for our hangers here, but made do. That could be because I wasn't attached to a particular type in the States. Most of us here have at least something here that is a comfort of 'home' whether it is a particular food we bring back, a family heirloom, a fave blanket, or in your case, hangers. If you're sure you can't get them here, then by all means pack some.

If you go to Target, they are the plastic white ones that are as thick as your little finger. They never bend, break or get pulled into weird shapes. They always look pristine and new. I'm glad to hear others have little things they hoard, even if they are more delicious to eat than hangers. :p

I brought hangers with me when I moved, but if I had to I would not bother.

Ikea sells white plastic hangers that are really sturdy but if you're short on closet space (as most UK houses are) you may find space saving hangers to be helpful.

Primark sells them for a fiver and because they are thinner than plastic hangers, you can fit more in the closet.  :D

But hey, whatever makes you happy....... ;D

Edited to add: They are flocked so nothing slips off them.

I once brought an entire large suitcase full of them back with me. I figured why buy them again? Not crazy at all.

Ok, phew. This makes me feel less crazy! ;D I have my favorite hangers from The Container Store that I have been hoping to bring over! So, my vote is "No, not crazy at all!"

I seriously considered bringing my hangers as well, but decided against it. I don't like the ones we have here, but they are slimmer, and since the wardrobes aren't that big, I can fit a lot more in than if I had the thicker hangers from home.  If you have the room, my vote is "bring 'em!" :)

LMAO, this is really funny. I left a closet full of hangers behind in the States thinking I would just buy more here. Yeah well, I hate the ones I have now, and I feel like I've wasted so much money on new ones. Just wish I had brought some of them anyway.
You're definitely not crazy.

I ended up folding a lot of the clothes I would normally hang, just because they didn't want to stay on hangers, or were too heavy for the hangers we had. I didn't want to go out and spend a lot of money trying to find hangers, so I folded all that I could.

I was just naturally assuming one would take some hangers at least.  :o Providing there is room of course. I have some padded ones I like for knits. I also like the ones with clips for hanging a top with skirt/pants. I also have some of the plastic ones that come with a garment -- I just use those to drip dry things so won't bother taking any of those.

Today DH (Yay! Get to use that!) and I were packing and repacking all the luggage so he could take an extra bag of my stuff home to the UK. I had to open one pocket and empty it out to get the bag zipped and he said "Hangers?" I said "Yes, I know its silly but it's a bit of home and they make me happy." He was OK with it. His wardrobe is full of wire hangers from the dry cleaners, these icky flimsy yellow ones and then other various hangers from clothes he's purchased. EVERY time I go over I cull the herd and work my hangers into the mix. :0) Now I'll just pack a box of them with some clothes I am going to ship and send the rest over.

DH thinks I'm nutz bcuz I want to do the same thing! I haven't made the move yet, but everytime I visit I say I'm going to bring some from the states. I hate the felt ones (I like my clothes to slip on & off the hangers) and he also has wooden ones (that are just too big & clunky). It's good to know I can buy plastic ones when I get there so now I'm just torn on if I want to bring some or not!
