UK uni textbooks

Hey all,
This may seem like a dumb question (I know what you'll say to that- dumb questions don't exist on this forum), but in UK universities are textbooks provided or are they purchased like in American universities? I guess I assumed that they're purchased, but now I'm not sure.

They are purchased, but depending on what course you do, you are unlikely to need to buy as many textbooks in the UK as is expected in the US. In some cases, you can do an entire UK degree without needing to buy a single textbook.

I studied Physics in the UK, but spent one year of the degree studying abroad in the US. In the entire 3 years I was studying in the UK, I bought a total of 2 textbooks, both of which were purchased in the first semester - one general 'University Physics' book and one Quantum Mechanics textbook (I took approximately 25-30 classes in total over the 3 years, but didn't need to buy any other textbooks - I could if I wanted to, but it wasn't required).

In the 1 year I was in the US, I had to buy 8-10 textbooks (at least 1 per class, and it was essentially required that you buy them).

Same here. I only purchased two. The rest I just went to the library for.

Another to say you probably won't need all of them. I bought all the books on the list my department sent me before the course started and we didn't use any of them. Little did I know that it was more like "suggested reading" than required books. The only reading we ever had as assignments to be discussed in class were journal articles. I used most of the books as sources for essays and my dissertation, though.

That's good to hear that I probably won't need all of them and that they're not as required as they are in the US. It'd just be another expense to consider.
