Suitcases?
« on: May 21, 2012, 03:46:37 PM »
So For xmas I got a nice 5pc luggage set...
I'm heading to Bristol for 3wks, possibly longer and of course I'm a typical overpacker!
I was wondering I'm not gonna look like a possible overstayer If I bring my large suitcase and then as a carry on the tiny version that comes just a bit past my knees. I always bring tons of Stuff back to the states so the carry on won't be massively packed. I know immigration doesn't see the checked baggage but they always make me feel so damn nervous. Plus I don't want to run the risk of having a overweight bag.
Think i'll be okay with two suitcases? even though the one is a carry on sized Roller?

That's not overpacking. You're going for three weeks; two suitcases is not a big deal.

My first trip to the UK was for 6 weeks. I had 4 bags total:

1 enormous, barely-made-the-cutoff-for size bag, which weighed 62lbs. (overweight)
1 enormous, barely-made-the-cutoff-for size bag, which weighed 48lbs.
1 laptop case (large professional one that was crammed with other items)
1 totebag (acting as a handbag)

Nobody questioned the amount of items I had in relation to the time I was staying.

On a side note, I did not know you needed a pound coin to get a cart for your luggage (I hadn't flown in over 10 years). I ended up having to drag two bags several feet, then run back and drag the other two bags, and proceed this way, dragging two bags, then running back for the other two, through the baggage area to the arrivals section. I was so exhausted (from not sleeping for 2 days and the flight), that I ended up kicking the last two bags the final few feet. I thought my future DH was going to split a gut laughing.   I'm sure if anyone was recording it, it made quite humorous viewing afterward.

You don't need a coin at Heathrow; not sure about elsewhere.

You do in Manchester.  It used to be you just needed one to unlock it and it would get returned when you clipped it back to the other trolleys but I saw something on the news awhile back that it might not be returned any longer so have one just in case.

Are you going to be allowed that much luggage on your ticket? Most economy tickets it's one suitcase at 23kilos and one carry one...plus hand bag...and if like me you have to fly onto another destinations such as the Isle of Man with the likes of flybe...it's 20kilos....so you have to pack for that instead...

Maybe she paid extra for another bag? Or maybe she elite status with the airline or one of their partners. Star Gold members get 3 bags up to 70 lbs each on most Star Alliance airlines!

I think that's what she's doing- the one checked and then the carry on.

yes one is a checked bag (The large one) and the smaller roller will be a carry on as its within Whats allowed for free by KLM. I'll have it in the overhead and Keep my purse under the seat. I feel so adult using the overhead...lol. First two times I went I had a small knapsack as a carry on but it wasn't feaseable with my laptop so I bought the max carry on i could out there last time so I'd have room to bring stuff last time. I've bought luggage in the UK twice this time I have my own actual set which is nice.

I think you'll be just fine! I've brought more at once and was never questioned. I'll be bringing 2 checked, one carry on (rolling bag) and a backpack with my laptop this summer for a month, since I need to move stuff over as I can before the official move in September.

You don't need a coin at Heathrow; not sure about elsewhere.

I've never seen an airport that charges for carts in the UK. I'm not sure about other airports, but Heathrow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh definitely don't, as I've had MANY bags at all three and have never paid.

As for the luggage... you won't have an issue. If you were getting on a train or travelling around a lot once you arrived, I'd say pack as light as possible, but if you're picked up at the airport, don't worry. You may want to leave a lot of room in your suitcase, though, because I always found myself stocking up on inexpensive clothes and shoes from Primark whenever I visited and my bags were always overflowing by the time I left.
