Bereavement fares?
« on: May 28, 2012, 07:49:45 PM »
DH's dad in the US has been in poor health for awhile now and has been in hospice care for a few weeks now.  We were told today he probably only has a few days left.  His family has sort of hinted that they expect him to come for the funeral even though he made a trip there a couple weeks ago when we were given the news.

To make things a bit more complicated we have tickets booked to fly there in 2 weeks which we purchased a few months ago.  Mine and the kids we booked on expedia and his through AA (we fly MAN ->Chicago)  He called AA today to ask about a bereavement fare and they said they don't do them for international flights and that he would have to pay the change fee plus the fare difference for a new ticket (expedia gave the same advice for our tickets).

Does anyone have any ideas or other suggestions to offer?  He doesn't have his heart set on going as we just spent money for a ticket a few weeks ago but if there is a feasible option out there we would consider it.

Thanks

Do you have any FF miles sitting around anywhere you can use? Credit card points you can convert to miles? They're often pretty good for last-minute bookings like this. Airlines often release unsold inventory as award seats a few days before flights.

Airlines are generally more flexible with tickets purchased directly, rather that via Expedia. But having said that, and having purchased a 'bereavement fare' ticket a few years back, the quote that 'bereavement is what you feel when they quote the fare' was definitely true. We would have been better off buying a ticket at 'retail'.

Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

Thanks for the replies.  DH was on the phone all day and we found out that AA does not offer anything for international flights and expedia wasn't very helpful.  Using our miles would have been a waste because of the fees it was the same as just changing it.  Because he booked directly through the airlines he was able to change his ticket a little bit easier but still had to pay a fee and the fare difference with less headache than his phone experiences with expedia.

I tried looking for bereavement fares back in October when FIL passed. I found out that those that DO offer a bereavement fare, offer the discount off of their HIGHEST fare. I ended up just booking the lowest price I could find online, which was still lower than their "Bereavement" fare.
