Serviette to me as well, but then I'm "northern", and deff kitchen roll!

We get napkins for parties etc but rest of the time, if needed, it's just some kitchen roll or tissues.

Also one that confused DW the other week, she was asking where I'd put something  and I said "It's on the board in the kitchen", and she said "What board? it's not on the chopping board" and I had to think what she'd call it and I'm saying "on the side"..."side of what?" before I finally said "counter" and then she knew what I meant.
I was one of those occasional moments I'm sure we all have when you can't think how else to describe something yet you know it's not the word your trans-atlantic partner understands!

There's a lot of history in your first choices of words, TMan!  I can see where in earlier times there probably was just a "board" along "side" the sink. How about "worktop" -- that seems fairly common?

I am American living in Glasgow Scotland, also found this very strange, so you are not alone.  The ones I first purchased at Tesco were cheap and flimsy really not what we are used to... anyway I have found at Costco, if you have one close to you...  Duni Premium Napkins 3 ply they are the closest I have found to what we are used to at home.

I grew up in Southern California, using kitchen roll (or 'paper towels' in the US) and that's what I've always used.  Although, mine is still generally so clean after use, I could almost convince myself I don't need one!

My West of Scotland Messy Marvin boyfriend is another matter... he uses kitchen roll (and says they always used it in his house growing up) and he uses like 3 or 4 sheets of kitchen paper and they're always just completely filthy with food gunk!  I have NO idea how he gets so messy... we are eating the same meal!

I've got a Cornish Messy Marvin. No matter how many napkins I provide him with, most of his supper seems to wind up on his shirt. I'm THIS close to buying him a bib.
