Boots is now Walgreens
« on: June 19, 2012, 02:30:54 PM »
Boots is now Walgreens!
Well thats stretching it a little. They are buying 45% with option of buying the rest later.
See you are getting closer to home by popping into Walgreens on the High Street.

I believe it's 45% with an option to buy the rest in 2015.

And my first thoughts on this, at a time when I'm facing losing my job in IT due to jobs being offshored, and I was at Asda when they sold to Walmart and most of the IT jobs went out of the country, is to see this as a very bad move for jobs in the UK.

Every major and decent brand in this country sells out.  It happens every year. We are fast loosing all our well known brands, Who then move them abroad kill of the jobs and in a lot of cases change the brand make-up. I wish there was a way to make it harder for companies and shareholders to destroy our capital creating businesses.

It's not like Boots was a small brand either, but I do hate to see the larger companies buy up all the competition.  I really like Boots Botanics so hope they dont get rid of their product lines!

In the taxi yesterday and they had the head of cosmetics and beauty on to discuss the acquisition and he was saying things should remain the same, products and service wise. Walgreens have no plans to change the name or anything like that. Also theres no plan to change the club card points either.

I think Boots REALLY want to get their product in the US, as that seemed to be the biggest part of the discussion.

I worked for Walgreens about 12 years ago and they always treated me very well, even granting me a transfer to another store in another state, when I had to move back to NY from Nashville. Their working model is similar to Boots, preferring to train from existing staff to promote within rather than hiring outside. I was actually on plan to become a pharmacy tech, and Walgreens were going to pay for my tests and what not. My SIL worked for Boots and they were doing the same with her...

Thats good to hear about their employee policies.
I worked for a competitor in California and one of our employees had worked for them and he said they were good to him.
I find Walgreens prices are very high when I comparison shop.
I think there have been some Boots brands in the US or Canada already.
From my memory of Boots I think they are head and shoulders above Walgreens in appearance.
Cheers

I hope they do! The only place I've seen in USA to buy Boots products is the very limited line at Target.

My brother works at Walgreens here in the States and he is very happy there, too. It makes me sad to think of Boots going away. They are so awesome! Don't change a thing, Boots!!

I'd much rather Target buy out Primark or something!

Yes we buy Boots products at Target, haven't seen them at Walgreens yet but wasnt really looking.  We usually just have family bring things over when they visit.  Will have to tell US friends to keep an eye out for them at Walgreens maybe soon!

It is apparently about creating the largest pharmacy in the world throughout twenty-two countries that will make it the largest prescription based distributor in the world. Apparently Boots will not be loosing it's label/brand name its more about getting Boots into the US than the other way around. Not so many people know Boots is actually heavily involved in drug manufacture and contributed greatly to the invention of modern ibuprofen. They claim no redundancies but at the end of the day that is not the whole issue. Sure keeping all the jobs and manufacturing is a big part of it. But when you sell out you loose more than just that. One cant but help look at the Cadbury/Kraft situation. Our much loved chocolate brand sold to a plastic cheese company who promised no job losses. Yet they closed one of the plants and moved production to Poland then they moved the corporate HQ to Switzerland to avoid paying corporation tax in the UK. And to top if off they then reduce the content of chocolate sneakily dropping out 20g here and there. I stopped buying it after that and it makes me sad.

Guess i'm just feeling bitter. What ever happened to our great empire where the sun never set  ;D ;D

There are so many bad things that go on that are beyond our control but some things we do have power over so I like you will avoid the Cadbury brand.

Target is weird. Somehow they sell the Tesco Cherokee line of clothing? And they sell Boots products! Good going Target. :)

The Cherokee line has been around in the U.S. for decades.  It's sold at Target, as well as Kohl's and, if I recall correctly, sometimes K-Mart and Shopko/Pamida (and probably other regional chains).

I thought it was odd when I saw it at Tesco. :)

I just looked it up - apparently Tesco started selling the Cherokee line in 2002, but it was first established in the US in 1973 :).
