Have you ever had carry on luggage weighed by the airline?
« on: June 19, 2012, 04:12:54 PM »
I'm connecting in Toronto to get on a flight to London. My flight to Toronto is Air Canada, which I've never flown. The luggage allowance on the website says carry ons have a 22 lb weight limit. I've flown plenty of other airlines, which never listed a weight limit for carry ons, only a size limit. I figured Air Canada won't actually weigh it, or will they? I wouldn't usually be worried but my check in is going to be VERY close to the limit and I've tried fitting a lot in my carry on and it is SO heavy!!!! I already looked at the seat map, and there are less than 12 people on my flight to Toronto, so I'm hoping they won't restrict baggage.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever had their carry on luggage weighed on any airline? and if so are they strict? Were you told to pay extra to check it in?

I've never flown Air Canada, and none of my flights have ever had my carry on luggage weighed beforehand (I think there WAS a size limit - if it fit into a box so big, you were okay).

You could always try calling the airline directly to ask.

Yes, it is rare, but I have had it happen.  You just move the heavy things to your other bag or to one of the checked bags. I've never been so over the limit that I couldn't do that.

I've only flown Air Canada once, but have never had carry on luggage weighed by any airline.

I had a connecting flight on Air Canada from Toronto last week.  They didn't weigh my carry on, but all I had brought was a book bag and my purse.  However, I didn't see anyone else's bags get weighed.

I didn't have to check in, since my I got both boarding passes before the first flight.  Between immigration/customs, and going through security again (apparently you can skip security if you go the right way and don't get lost like I did), there weren't any scales or anything that I saw to really weigh your stuff.

So long as you (or a strong person near you) can get it into the overhead bin above you, you should be fine!

Never flow Air Canada so I have no idea if they will or won't. Hopefully they won't for your sake!!

But, oh yeah, definitely have had my carry ons weighed and checked with the gage for size!  Lots of low cost airlines love to make you do that- Ryan Air, FlyBe, Jet2, EasyJet (size, not weight for them), etc....  Struggled on a few occasions after Christmas trips back to the US to balance everything out.  But I can tell you, I've had my coat (pockets, stuffed to the brim) weigh more than my carry on sometimes and they've never questioned that. Also, except for RyanAir, a lot of airlines let you take carrier bags on as 'free' luggage. So you stuff that for sure.   :P

Yeah, definitely -- wear a coat plus jacket plus cargo pants with lots of pockets for stuffing things in. And I have gotten away with carrying a handbag (larger than my "carryon") with both American and Virgin.  Never been weighed.

I've flown Icelandair BOS to LHR.  They have a weight cap on their carry ons as well.  They did weigh our carry ons.  We were hoping to not have to check in any luggage which is why we were doing carry ons, but we were over the weight limit, so we had to check them.

Virgin Atlantic have started weighing carryons and have twice weighed mine, including just last week out of LHR. I saw several desk crew asking people to place their carryon bags on the scales, and this happened to me at LAX back in October of last year too.

Coming home out of Dulles, they did not weigh my bag but I had stuck the heaviest things in my oversized travel "purse" and hidden some others in with my "snack bag" so I slipped by.

Because of this new weight twist, it was the first time I didn't use my small rolling case as cabin baggage. Instead I used my Ryanair soft pack type bag, which is nowhere near as comfy. Frustrating. :(

Aye - I've had carry ons weighed from LHR on Virgin. Considering how heavy my rolling carry on is, looks like it's time to retire it. :(

Being staturally challenged, I also have trouble getting the rolling carry-ons in the overhead (and there's never enough room under the seat in front  ;D) But DS did get me a small Eddie Bauer rolling duffel that's fairly light and expandable and I can just about manage it. Think they only have the large one now though  ::)

Yes, but only on the very tiny puddle-jumper that I take between Glasgow and the islands.  You'll probably be fine, but as others have said, a large purse is your friend.

The only time I had mine weighed was when I had two proper carry-ons and my purse. I was going to put my purse into one of them just to get on the plane, but I couldn't fit it in, so I decided to check one of the carry-ons.

I only ever flew Contintental.

Thanks for the replies everyone! It turns out my flight to Toronto Thursday night was delayed by 4 hours, making me miss my connection in Toronto for my flight to Heathrow. There were no more flights out that night so they flew me to Toronto, put me in a hotel (which I only used for 3 hours) and then I left Toronto in the morning. I asked them to check in my second bag for free because of the inconvenience, and they did ;D

When I was finally was on my flight to London, a flight attendant asked me do a favor for her to make another passenger happy. I offered to, and she gave me a fast track pass! I've never had one, and woah, are those things like GOLD. When I approached the immigration lines, the Non UK/EU line was probably 200 people long, and looked like 2 hours wait. The fast track line, I walked right up and was in within 3 minutes. From the time I got off the plane, went through immigration, got my bags and got to my boyfriend- it was probably 20 minutes!!! My BF was SHOCKED that I got out so fast! It was so nice that after 5 trips here, I finally got a break and didn't have to wait in that awful line.
