best UK bbq sauce?
« on: July 01, 2012, 07:49:55 PM »
So I lived in Texas for 9 years growing up and I love love love Stubb's bbq sauce, which can now be purchased across the US I believe.  I always bring a bottle back when I visit but it goes quick.  Other than trying to make my own version, does anyone have any recommendations for good bbq sauces available here (SE England)?  I've tried a few different brands and none of them taste that great imo.  I know the subject of bbq sauce is highly subjective (I'm from NC where the topic is very controversial!) but would love to hear your opinions.  Thanks!

I've just got back from Grillstock (in Bristol), it was a bbq cook-off/music festival and there was some fantastic sauces available.  I think if you google Grillstock there should be links to most of the vendors.

I've not found anything really like the selection we'd get back home.. Though I've looking in the Caribbean section and using jerked meat rubs/sauces usually works as a non-sweet substitute.

My friend Rich makes his own jerked sauce for chicken and it is divine, especially when cooked over a BBQ. Chicken gets sticky, spicy and oh so yummy

I love Stubbs and would have it on everything, if I could.  Since I can't, I use HP Spicy BBQ sauce and it's the only one that I have tried in the UK and liked.  The regular one is ok. But, the spicy has a nice kick to it.

Have you tried Bodeans? Their restaurants are really good and you can buy sauce online from them

You can get stubbs in most of the import places if you want to buy it, including their rub etc.

You can make bbq sauce really easily, and it's great as no HFCS :) I got a book from Amazon and have had a lot of fun making them :)

To answer your question, I'm pretty sure there's absolutely no decent UK BBQ sauces. :)

Oh my favourite BBQ sauce in the whole world is Gates & Sons...  Spent a fair bit of my younger life kicking around the KC area.

If your budget can handle it, I find great (imported US) BBQ sauce in the Harvey Nics Food Hall - including a Kansas City made one, the name escapes me...(but not Gates & Sons). They also have Bone Suckin' sauce & some others.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...
