Has anyone been down to the IRS office in London?
« on: July 02, 2012, 07:12:52 PM »
Sorry if this is a dup. (Checked the ten most recent pages.) Has anyone ever been down to the IRS office at the embassy? If so, what's it like? Are they friendly? Helpful? Hostile?

In short, to throw in a Catholic reference, is it like going to confession with a friendly, easygoing post-Vatican II priest or is it like stepping into the offices of the Holy Inquisition, circa 1495?

I went there a couple of years ago.  I was pretty worried, because I had some serious questions about my tax situation.  But it was really OK, the person who helped me was friendly, and I left feeling very relieved.  So in my experience, more post-Vatican II priest than Inquisition.

It's down in the basement, tiny, with no air conditioning.  When I went, you didn't need an appointment, but they were closed for lunch hour.

I went there a couple of weeks ago to drop off my tax return. As Chanah said, they're downstairs from the main level in a fairly small room (at least the part that's accessible to the public).

The woman took my forms and actually looked them over (a little), even though I didn't ask for any review. I don't know if she would have been able to answer super detailed tax questions (as I didn't have any), but she was friendly.

Keep in mind that no electronics are allowed in the embassy. Also, their definition of "electronics" is pretty vague - they told me my earbud headphones counted (among other things, like my Kindle, which I'd forgotten was in my bag), so I had to pay £3 at the local chemist to store those things for approximately 5 minutes.

I went last year to drop off my tax forms. I wasn't certain if them ended up in the bin because of how uninterested the person was to receive them.

They don't offer the little drawer to keep your mobile anymore or was it because you had too many items?

They said security wouldn't allow them to hold items. (I only had 3 things - Kindle, the "electronic" earbuds, and a bank security keyfob thing, so definitely easy to pop in a drawer somewhere.)

That stinks about the phones. But whew... The rest sounds promising. I'm planning to go down in the next few weeks. Cheers.
