Hi all!

This is the VERY FIRST TIME after 7 years, that my new husband (UK) and I (USA) are flying together internationally!

My question is... when we land in New York, do we queue together at immigration ... but in what line ? US citizens, or international visitors? Or do we go through separately?

What's your experience?

Thank you for your time!

I always ask and they always direct us to the US line. We fly into Newark.

Ditto. Just remember to ask first and you'll be fine. :)

Yes, always travel together as a family. If you are travelling together, they want you to go through together.

I was told the US wants you to go together as a family and after asking have always been directed to the US line.  At Heathrow I have been scolded for not going in the same line as my Husband but I say the sign says Non EU including US and I am a US passport holder.   Although last time I flew into Term 3 at Heathrow the sign was replaced with just Non EU.

We always ask which line. In the US apparently the people directing folk to the lines are from the airline and different airlines seem to have different rules for it. Now we just get in the US line and call one of them over to check it's ok. It always is and sometimes they've taken us out of a line to put us in a shorter or empty one - last time they pointed us to the diplomat desk!
Your husband will probably find he's never had an easier immigration experience in the US!
Coming into the UK, we usually go through the non-EU but we've been told to go to the shortest or quickest line a few times. They don't really mind so long as you are going through together. It makes the questioning much easier for the non-citizen.

When we came back from our honeymoon we asked the rep at passport control and she told us that we had to go to the non US line  ??? It took almost 2 hours!!! I was annoyed because I had heard that we could go together through the US line. This was in Dallas. I think next time we will just go to the US line without asking.

Not to sound awful, but I find that the people working directing queues at the airports are mostly agency staff (as are the check in people) and really don't know all the answers, or they can not be bothered with giving you the right information. I know that sounds terrible, but I do find that a lot, especially in my home airport, JFK! The IO's are much nicer and efficient, but the security people don't always give the right information.

I fly to DFW often & I have always found the border control there first class in whatever que you are in. Always seem to be greeted by a little Asian lady who speaks in some weird Texan/Chinese drawl. She is kick ass & if one que is substantaially shorter than the other she will move people over. I,ve seen her working at Houston too !! Just for the record last time the Mrs & me flew thro there she went in the US line & I the other & I beat her out. At the end of the day its just luck on how many people are passing thro.... Now Heathrow on the other hand........ is a royal pain in the ass for everyone.

Certa.

I have traveled quite a lot with my husband (UK). We have always been told to go into the US line so we just do that with out asking. And it seems to be that way at LHR and MAN airports too for some funny reason. I am not sure as to what line I enter the UK in. Do I go into the usual US lane or now that I have a spousal visa and will be entering for the first time, do I go in the EU lane. I guess I have 6 days to figure this one out. Lol
June 18th 2012- online application done and payed
June 22nd 2012- biometric done and paperwork sent
June 26th 2012- paperwork arrived NY
July 2nd 2012 - package opened
July 13th 2012 - phone call to confirm information
July 17th 2012- email to say my visa has been issued!

Control is not mine, it is His!
