Making/obtaining crumpets in the US
« on: July 15, 2012, 07:20:14 PM »
Hey all,

I've been having a terrible craving for some proper english crumpets lately, but I haven't been able to find anyplace that sells them out here in California.

Does anyone know somewhere I could get some, or failing that, have a good recipe?
I tried making them once, but they really didn't turn out well....sort of burnt on the outside and raw in the middle.

I have heard that Trader Joes does a good crumpet.

I know Kroger here in the middle of the mountains Virginia has crumpets.  They are in the fridge section nearish the bagels but more towards the cheese.  You might find them in some really odd place in your local supermarket.

Barring that some of the online British shops carry them.

I saw a Brit ex-pat friend of a Brit ex-pat friend on facebook (if you see what I mean) that posted up photos of his crumpet making attempts in the US....I think he said he got it right on the 3rd attempt.

I get my crumpets from Stater Bros. They are in the deli section by the cakes and bagels. Taste fine to me - it's just the butter that's off and the lack of a decent tube of Primula.

Here on the east coast, we can get them at Wegmans.

Kroger was carrying them in most stores as of last year, usually in the refrigerated section sometimes near the eggs. I remember a major brand (but can't remember the name) being sold years back, but they were ridiculously expensive, like $3 for six.

I have a recipe that I will dig out. The key is, you need crumpet rings or something that will work instead (like tuna cans with both ends removed). Aside from that, they are relatively easy to make.

I'll have to check out Trader Joe's.

Does anybody else like to have melted cheese on their crumpets. Like cheese on toast but substitute the toast for a crumpet?

I was back in the UK in May for vacation and would wake up, stroll downstairs and my Mum would have cheese crumpets, bacon on toast with a side dish of tinned tomatoes and a nice cup of tea...

I'm starving now.. ;D
