Color me embarrassed.
« on: July 19, 2012, 10:12:44 PM »
I recently went to the store to do a weeks shop.

I very specifically recalled having put a small chicken and sausages in their own bag to keep the meats apart from the rest. I vaguely remember then putting a bag of bananas and peppers on top.

When I got home with the shopping I did a quick look around to find the bag of chicken and sausages. I can't see it.

Thinking I had left it in the bagging area, I rush back to the store. The cashier just looks at me blankly when I asked if I had left my bag there.

I went to customer services for help. At this time I can feel myself getting upset because I've just spent £90 and I've gone and lost two major things items needed for meals that week. When they tell me that the only thing they can think of is that the person behind me must have taken it, I began to cry. Which of course just humiliates me.

The sweet ladies at the desk obviously feel bad for me. I'm apologising for my reaction because it's a bit extreme and trying to calm myself down but it's all coming out as a blubbering mess. The one who is in charge tells me to go grab the items I think I had lost. So I do, I grab a chicken, sausages, peppers and bananas. When I get back to the desk, they just wave me through and tell me not to worry about it. I apologise again and thank them for their help. They were lovely and just asked me not to mention it as they're not supposed to do that sort of thing.

And then  I got home.

And I found a bag with a box of cherries and a bag of bread on top.

And a chicken, sausages, peppers and bananas underneath.

I am mortified.

I obviously just didn't properly look, a mistake which I won't make again. I couldn't go back because the store closed by the time I got home and I'm afraid that if I go the next day, the ladies will get in trouble.

I feel so guilty and embarrassed.

And I have no idea what I'm going to do with two chickens.

Oh no, poor you Ashley!  Did you have the girls with you? (I think twins could easily distract you!) - Those were very nice ladies and, honestly, this is one of those moments in life where s*it happens- especially if you're feeling distracted or stressed or tired and it is so easily done (kids with you or not!)   No rhyme or reason sometimes.
I'd say what goes around, comes around, so pay the nice deed those ladies did forward and do something nice for someone else soon.
And don't beat yourself up!  :-*

I can't even use my twins as an excuse because they were at home in bed. No, this is all me just being totally crap.

Don't feel bad - it was an honest mistake.

Put the extra chicken in the freezer!

Pay it forward one day! You had a Mom moment. Even with kiddos in bed, it still strikes!

((hugs))
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Sheesh, don't be angry with yourself for being human!  It's no big deal, really.

Back when I worked at the natural food market we got a call almost everyday with someone who *swears* they left this or that behind on the counter etc.  Our store manager would always say, "Before you get upset, just do me a favor and go look in your fridge."  Nine times out of ten the item would be in the fridge.

People make mistakes and we all know and understand that because we've all been there in one form or another.

I was at the checkout in the supermarket, that I frequently use, and the cashier picked up a white paper bag and asked what was in it? One pastry, I said. When I got to the car I found that I forgotten that there were instead two donuts? So did I run back in there? no!
I have a plan to pay for my error without making a big deal of it. I think next time I'm in the store I will get the cashier to ring up 59 cents without telling her why. That should do it I think? I don't want to have to explain why I'm doing it because it will seem like I have a halo  around my head. Conscious? no. Just the right thing to do. Now if there was a thousand dollars involved?? I did once tell a teller at the Bank of America that she had paid me $100 too much and she seemed to be annoyed that I told her and she never thanked me. Yes I could have used the extra money but (fill in the blank) Wrong is wrong.
Cheers

This kind of happened to me and DH recently, but with hamburgers and pineapple juice. We knew we bought it, but when we went to go use them, they were nowhere to be found. We looked in the fridge, the freezers, in all the cabinets (in case we mindlessly put them there), in the boot (in case they fell out of the bags or we left them in there), but they never turned up. DH and I both thought we had some sort of joint hallucination. Turns out they were in MiL’s fridge. We had stopped over there on the way back and forgot to take them home with the rest of the shop.

Anyway, my point is these things happen. DH and I don’t even have children, so we don’t really have an excuse. Enjoy the chicken!

I've done the exact same thing (back in the States). Don't feel too bad about it. I like the suggestion of putting the money into a charity box in the store if you can't get it out of your head.

It happens! Pay it forward or pop a bit extra in a charity box if it's bothering you.

Make a charitable donation in the same amount or give the other chicken to someone who is having a hard time affording food.
