I'm getting REALLY tired of being told i'm too young....
« on: September 30, 2004, 09:49:18 AM »
SO i have a strong background in financial marketing.  I'm going for positions that ask for my number of years (5) and all.  I thought i'd found the ideal job....i've been waiting on pins and needles for them to call.

I follow up with my recruiters this morning, and one tells me *about my dream job* that i'm too young.  And he's annoyed at it too.  I guess he just placed someone there a while ago who is older than me, and even though i've got EXACTLY what the company wants....they don't believe, that at my age (27) I can come in and be senior to this person that is older than me EVEN THOUGH i have more experience.

I am heart broken.  This is the third time i've been told this..........

PS: here is the email i wrote to my recruiter on the matter:

WEll, this isn't all of it......

I'm pretty shocked that I was turned down because of my age, considering I have been the head of plenty of projects where I was in charge of people 5, 10 years my senior.  Also my partner at my last job was 5 years older than I, and I was still the most senior in role due to my expierience and professionalism.  It's a shame that a company that sounds so great can be so straight and narrow about something like age, before even meeting someone to see what they are truly about.

Have you tried taking your age off your CV?

It's not on there.

They figure out that i graduated from uni in 1999 (on CV) and then my past 5 years was working for a top global financial provider.

sometimes i think i should have taken the crappy job my old company was offering me.

How silly.  27 is a reasonable age if you ask me.  are you sure they are not just using this as an excuse? I only ask because I can think of quite a few  people your age and younger who are in manangerial roles over people much older than themselves.   Perhaps it is something about the finance sector? Dare I say it - would they be so worried about your age if you were a man?

Its almost as bad as being told you are too old and too experienced (would get bored with the job).......ugh

(and all because I didn't want to go back into my field again)

i tell ya, i'm really pissed about all of this.  it's really the lamest excuse i have EVER heard.  Yes, call me in....see me and THEN make your decision if I can handle it.

This woman has no idea what i'm about......how can she judge me on age alone?????

and yeah, it just so happens the person this guy placed, who the woman was worried i wouldn't be able to be senior to, is a man.

she probabally didn't want to freaking offend him by bringing in a woman 4 years his junior to make more $$ and have more power than him.

Yeah, in this day and age, 27 isn't considered "young".  I guess it's all relative.  I might be told I am too old to work some places because I am 30.  Rediculous.  I'm leaning towards the fact that you are a woman, and that you would have been placed in a position of authority over men older than you....and, I guess they just couldn't handle that....but, it is unfair.

Hehehe.  Well i guess my recruiter is mentioning my points to the hiring person to see if it gets me anywhere.  So at least my comments to him were taken pretty seriously.  He was actually applaled they didn't want to see me too.

Well good luck with it, Amiloo. Let us know.

I think it's shocking that they won't see you because of your age. If anything I would have thought that'd be a plus. I'd have thought it would have been damn impressive that you're so qualified at your age.

I had the opposite problem. (Well, kind of) I was applying for jobs I was way too overqualified for and no one would see me because of this.  I had to prove I would not be bored in a position I used to manage.  'Yes, I want to make a lot less money, what, is that strange?'  Keep trying though, someone will wise up soon!!!

Britwife, that was my first thought too, that they were using age as an excuse. Because otherwise it doesn't make sense.
Married to Graham, we run our own open-source computer training company in beautiful Wiltshire out of our 1814 Georgian Regency home (a former lodging house and once featured in Antiques Roadshow)

Being told you're too young for a particular job sounds vaguely illegal... :-\\\\
