What did you do with your old phone
« on: August 07, 2012, 02:37:53 AM »
I am sure this has been asked before. But i went back a few pages and didn't see it right away but what did you do with your old phone.

I am on contract with ATT and i would LOVE to just be able to get out of it without paying anything when i leave in Dec...but seeing how i doubt that is going to happen...

what did you do when you left the states?

Let them know you are leaving the country and they may let you out of the contract. I had to fax them my lease in the UK as proof that I had moved.

Same here.  I was able to get out of the contract by proving that I was leaving the country, so there was nowhere they could just transfer the contract to.

I hung on to the phone itself because it had so many phone numbers in it, which was helpful in the beginning. (I don't use that now.)  Then on my last trip to the US, I took it and bought a temporary package that gave me a week's use on it so I could use it while I travelled the US.  It had been so many years though since I bought it, the battery turned out to be rubbish, and I was constantly recharging it or running out of juice on long hauls, so I won't be using it again.

so the timing is perfect. Dec is when I am planning to move so it works out perfectly.

Is it an iphone? DH says that AT&T is now unlocking iphones as long as you've been on contract for 6 months. Apparently you can just go into a store and ask. That could be a bonus as then you don't have to get a new phone in the UK.

We have not done this ourselves, but plan on doing so in a few months so we can bring our phones with us and use local sims on our visits.

I have an older iphone that is out of AT&T contract and I haven't used it for about 12 months. I found out I can buy minutes for 10 cents per minute. I bought $25 worth and I'm chuff!
Good on ya AT&T!!!
