What's the best/cheapest airline you've traveled with?
« on: August 11, 2012, 01:49:04 AM »
Well, I might be going again to visit my love in England in late October--yippee! I've missed my boyfriend sooo much. However, he will be paying for my flight as I do not have any income and I only have my $1,500 in savings (and he offered to pay because he's a doll ;D) which I want to save to show the immigration officer I have that as support anyway. He tells me I need to be looking at flights and such. I was just wondering, what is the best (and cheapest, I don't wanna make him go broke here) airline you've traveled with? I've traveled with British Airways, last time. It was moderately cheap. My experience was... eh, to say the least. The flight there, two older people were sitting next to me and they weren't very nice at all, which is no fault to the airline, but when going back my entertainment system that they provided was broken completely. So I just drew for 6 hours until I got home. Anywho, any answers are appreciated!

I've always had great experiences with Lufthansa and my one way to London was just over three hundred dollars. The flight was quiet, albeit not full of passengers, and the staff were very generous with the drinks.

I quite liked Virgin, but they're not always the cheapest. I've heard you could fly Iceland Air quite cheaply, but that will mean a layover in Reykjavik and I'm not sure what their entertainment/food is like, if there is any.

Iceeland air is both cheap and horrifying :) There's no food (you pay for everything) or entertainment, you can get trapped in Reykjavik for hours and the planes are the most uncomfortable EVER.

In the past 2 years, I've flown 7 times with USAir.  Cost of flights ranged from $980- ish to $1180-ish. Only once was there a delay (in December, because of ice).  The rest of the time, the airplane took off and landed exactly on time. The entertainment was sufficient. The food is actually pretty good (for airline food). I suffer from extreme claustrophobia and anxiety, so any problem I had on the flight was because of *me*, not the airline. On about 1/2 of the flights, the staff was extremely friendly. On the other half, they were okay - not overly friendly but not rude, either.

In my experience, no one airline is consistently cheaper. The prices fluctuate constantly. If you know the dates you want to travel, I'd advise setting up an email alert on a site like kayak.com and they will flag you when the price drops. You should find decent prices in late October.

I have always been a fan of Virgin's service although on my last trip home in June, I was less than impressed. I hope it was a one off experience or I will have to rethink my loyalty to them. I have also flown US based airlines and in all my years of transatlantic trips, I have never had a great flight with any of them. YMMV.  :)

I totally agree with what Courtney has said about US based airlines..I fly with BA if I can at all help it. AA, Delta and Continental all suck as far as I am concerned..there on board staff are the rudest I have ever encountered.

I signed up for delta sky miles so I basically use delta as much as possible. $6-800 round trip. It's usually the cheapest depending on time of year.

This!!

I've become a new fan of Aer Lingus actually - their transatlantic planes are all new - flight attendants are really nice too and lots of good deals on prices.

Aer Lingus tends to be one of the cheapest if you're flying from the east coast. If you can fly from JFK or Boston, you're golden! They often have good sales.

Agree re: flying from JFK or Logan; there's a lot of competition on those routes, and most of the 'deals' are for direct flights from those airports.

I usually fly USAirways, because of the connections, plus I fly to/from Manchester. Delta is ok sometimes, but occasionally it's an older plane, and definitely not comfortable. I personally had a great experience with Continental last summer after avoiding them like the plague for years.

Kayak is one of the best sites to check for deals. Go there first, then compare with the airlines own site. Sometimes there a difference of $5 or so.

I'd rate KLM pretty decent in price and entertainment. When I went last October my flight was $900. Most have layovers in Amsterdam since I fly into Bristol Int. Airport. But I'd rate them pretty good in price, entertainment and food!

Flights to/from the US from Bristol airport are often much more expensive than flights to/from other cities. You could probably save yourself a couple of hundred dollars in airfare if you flew into London instead.

I've lived in Bristol all my life, but I never fly to the US from Bristol because it's too expensive. I normally just take a bus or a train to London and fly from there instead.

For example, flights from Chicago to Bristol this summer are about $1000, but flights from Chicago to London are $770 (and then you just have to pay about £40 for a train or bus fare to Bristol).
