best place to change £ to $?
« on: September 30, 2004, 09:51:18 PM »
We've got 15+ folks coming from the US to our wedding here in the UK. What's the best place for them to change money? In the US? Here? At the airport? At cashpoints?

Thanks!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Careful with the ATMs tho.  Both my friend and I have problems with some banks and our US cards.  I remember being in Scotland and London both, going to use an ATM and it refusing to give me money.  Walk across the street to another bank, try theirs and no problems at all.

I'd definitely come over with some £'s in pocket.  Maybe not enough for the whole trip, but enough for a day or so.

I've always notified my American Bank, prior to coming to the UK, that I would be in this Country....and I used my Debit and Credit Cards with no problems anywhere.  My husband did the same with his England Bank, before traveling to the U.S., and again, no problems.

And yes, I would definately have some cash on arrival....just pocket money for a few days.  I "think" someone told me that the Post Office does not charge a fee for issuing foreign currencies, but not sure about that one.
God gives us our relatives - thank God we can choose our friends.

I think some banks in the UK and Europe only take a 4 digit code.  So when I first came to visit in the 90's I had a 7 digit code and only entered the first 4.  Might not have been your problem Caitlinn, but just a thought.  Also a good idea though to let your bank know and credit cards too.  I called all mine when I moved here to let them know.  I knew they would be missing me :P

You can also exchange money at post offices all around...it's commission free (did it yesterday to get euros).

Ditto witht he Post Office. I've repeatedly used it to get euros. Commission-free, no fuss.

Will post offices change American cash to pounds too?

I brought some cash with me last summer and learned that $100 bill is difficult to exchange due to all the counterfeits.

We did it the "hard" way.  My uncle deposited it into his bank, they told him what it "exchanged" to in £ and he withdrew that at a cash point using his own card.

Hey j.,

I thought that we'd lost you! Yes, I just checked, the PO will buy dollars. And they should accept a C note if it's in the Big Ben style (large picture).

Well, thanks for that info lightbulb!  Making a short hop to visit my uncle (in the UK of course!) next month, so that's very helpful.

Nah, you didn't lose me, I've just been wandering around a bit!   ;D

Wish it was for more than just a week, but...I need to get my house in order here in the US before making the move a more permanent one.
