Customs forms on used computer parts from USA
« on: September 06, 2012, 08:28:42 PM »
I've got a chance to get a i7 980 CPU from a guy in California.  Problem is I don't know what he needs to say on paperwork when he mails it to me.   ???

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

How much is it worth, how large is it? and what do you need it for *(personal use or for resale?)

Thanks for replying.
Paid £180 for it.  They sell here for £250-300
It's about 90x90x15mm. Think it will post is a large envelope.
For my personal computer.

I did this a while back (well a long while back)

I ordered 1 and the guy put 'Computer part - Gift' on it and the value (which was about £100 at the time - it was delivered no problems.

I then ordered three together ('cos I though I could sell them and make a profit) and the guy put 'Computer parts - Gift' on it and the value of £300 and it was intercepted by HMRC and taxed / VAT'd to make it not worthwhile (though I wasn't out of pocket)

Its a risk, but up to you

Thanks Gant.

Do you remember what percent the tax was.  I know VAT is 20%.

i7 980 sell here for much more than £180 + £36 VAT so would still be an okay price.  Not great, but still okay.

Thanks for all your help.  Appreciate it.

For the first one, I obviously got a deal 'cos i wasn't taxed, but when I bought the three, I can't remember the rate, but I wasn't out of pocket although it made it so it wasn't worth doing again  >:(

Hi,
Deliberately labeling an item incorrectly to avoid customs charges etc is actually illegal.

All goods imported into the UK are subject to various duties, customs and VAT charges, be that personal use or not. You need to look at the HMRC website to find out if there's any concessions for the particular item you are wishing to import. Different products will have different rates of VAT, customs and import duty charges.

http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageImport_Home

You can always ring them up to ask if you are unsure etc.
