Seattle to Reading Feb 2013!
« on: September 12, 2012, 07:12:22 PM »
Hello Everyone!

I've recently been approved for a job transfer from my current location near Seattle, WA to Reading, England. The plan is to have all the paperwork completed and ready to move come February 2013, which at this point feels practically like tomorrow! So in the spirit of learning everything I can and many Google-related activities, here I am on this board with you lovely people :).

Some of my stats:
-Born and raised in the Seattle, WA region
-Late twenties
-Married just over a year to my Indian love
-Working for a payment technologies company for the past 6+ years
-Loves the outdoors/nature/countryside, learning about other cultures, cooking, and long walks on the beach (of course!)
-Moving will likely be my first "visit" to the UK whatsoever!

I'd truly appreciate learning about others' experiences with this type of international move, as well as any suggestions you might have on where to make a home-base, renting flats vs flatshares/houseshares, what you had to do to get a bank account setup, unexpected quirks you encountered while getting established there, etc.

Also would really love to know of any experiences folks have had with bringing a foreign spouse (non-US or UK passport holder) with you.

Blessings to All!

Hi and welcome to the board! I'm another Washingtonian, gorgeous weather we've been spoiled with this summer, eh?
Unfortunately I can't help you with any of your questions but I wanted to wish you a welcome and best wishes for your upcoming move.  :)
9/11/2012 Husband mailed his US citizenship application.
9/17/2012 Received e-mail stating his application has been entered into the system.
9/22/2012 Hubby received letter with date for finger printing.
10/12/12 Hubby went for finger printing.
10/26/12 Dh got a letter stating when he should appear for his interview and test- 11/27/12- just a month away!!!
11/27/12 We went to dh's interview and test- he passed and we went back 4 hours later for the Oath Ceremony! 95 people from 38 countries, really pretty cool!
So he's now a US citizen!!

I'm in the Seattle area as well, and hoping to move to the Dorset/Southampton area (probably an hour or two south of Reading) within the next year or so.  Would love to have a chat!

At least the weather shouldn't be too much of a shock to you.  Our climate here probably has more similarity to the UK than just about any other place in the US.

For your hobbies/interests, I would recommend looking for meet up groups now, as there are many in the area centered around dozens of interests.

Hi! I'm new here and just registered tonight! I'm in NC where I've lived my whole 56 years of life basically. I'm moving to Binfield, Berkshire in 44 days to live with my fiancé. Binfield is just a few miles from Reading, beautiful area! We should keep an eye out for each other if we need a US friend once we are there!

Good luck to us both! I can't wait to get there!

Hi,

I am also from the Seattle area and we moved here last Oct. I live near Warfield (about 10 - 15 minutes from Reading). As I have just spent the last 4 months trying to settle in I will gladly share some thoughts that might make your transition easier.
