My toenail is falling off!
« on: October 01, 2004, 08:07:14 PM »
Okay, this isn't a life-or-death situation, but it's grossing me out!  Last week I dropped a plate that landed right on my toe (ow!) and led to my toenail's horrible and quite unattractive demise.  It's all black and loose, and my doctor said there isn't anything I can do about it; it'll just fall off on its own and a new one will grow in its place.

One of my annoying friends was trying to freak me out by saying the new nail might pierce my skin and then I will need surgery or an emergency toe removal, but he knows how much of a hypochondriac I am so I don't trust him.  Has anyone here lost a toenail before, and if so how long did it take for the new nail to grow and did you have any problems?  It's not a serious issue, but I keep avoiding looking at my toe because it's really hideous and I'm worried about Piercing Toenail Death!   :o

My ex boyfriend had a stool fall on his foot and he lost a toenail just like you.

It grew in perfectly fine, no pain or trouble at all.  I seem to recall it took about 2 months before it was all the way back in, but I could be wrong there-but I know it grew back totally normally, looked normal and everything.

I can call my Mom the RN and ask her about Piercing Toenail Death, if you like.  ;)

My aunt is also an RN and I'm constantly calling her up about stuff.  I think if I mentioned Piercing Toenail Death she'd never take me seriously again (although I'm not sure if she still does).

Thank you for sharing your ex's toenail story.  I feel a bit better now.   ;)

I'm glad I wasn't taking a sip of my coffee when I read that.   [smiley=laugh4.gif]

[smiley=gossip.gif]  Sharing is caring, my friends.  Anyone got a spare toenail?

've lost a toe nail so many times (i run in races....it's called runners toe)

It's not an issue.  i've had no issues.  it takes a while to grow back....but it will be fine.

Many years ago when I lived in the tropics, I caught a nasty tropical bacteria under both of my big toenails.  They both turned black, fell off and happily, they both grew back perfectly fine.

Although my toenail demise was not a result of an accident, it's all the same:  toenail turns black, falls off and grows back (perfectly normal).

Fourteen years later, and this is still a much loved story by the people who were around from those days.  It's funny what people remember, especially since we spent so much time partying on the beach back then.   ;)

Good luck to you and your toe.

Now I'm picturing the grandkids all gathered round, waiting for the Toe Story so they can go to bed happy.

Sorry guys.  I just can't help giggling over the toe discussions.  I'm not making fun-I hope you don't think I am.

No worries here, Saf.  I think it's funny, too, which is why I shared this story.  Hopefully, to show that although it's a bit freaky at the time, it's survivable and has a funny side.

Nah, I'm not insulted.  I find it amusing that I'm so freaked out about an itty bitty toenail (well, it's my big toenail, but whatever).   ::)

Gross.....I hope you are not in the middle of dinner.
I did something similar to my thumbnail.
It got ugly. Failed to heal. The new nail grew in but kept going manky.
I began to think I was stuck with it for life..........:(
Eventually, after many momths, I ripped it all off.
The new nail grew in just fine.

It's much looser today and smells a bit like the sea.  Do you think my toe has bad karma and is being reborn into a fish?   :o

Although I suppose a fish would be a bit higher up than a toe.  Hmm.

I was going to respond to this but I can't stop giggling.

It "smells a bit like the sea"?

Ahoy there!

Yes, my toe now inspires wistful nostalgia in the Leeds sailor community.  One whiff o' this baby as I'm walkin' by and they're runnin' off to find a boat.  Some are so desperate they're tossing themselves into the River Aire!
