1st anniversary gift ideas?
« on: October 01, 2012, 04:14:19 PM »
Our 1st anniversary is at the end of this month and I am stumped on what to get my DH. I want it to be something meaningful, that he can have for life or for a very long time. He's a bit hard to buy for.

Some things about him:

1. He's 51, if that makes any difference.
2. He enjoys photography, but I think I'm getting him a camcorder for Christmas.
3. He doesn't wear watches (except a pocket watch I already bought him).
4. He likes football/Manchester United.
5. He drinks port, whiskey and Stella Artois (not all together :D)
6. He's not into fashion at all.
7. He doesn't play computer games.
8. He has a new computer. He doesn't use smartphones or tablets, etc.

Again, I would prefer a gift that is meaningful/long lasting, but am up for any and all suggestions!

Thank you!

Well, I have no suggestions, but he sounds totally awesome and totally adorable!

If I think of anything, I will let you know...

Married 04/13/11, in NYC.
Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.

Traditionally, first anniversary is supposed to be paper gifts.  How about artwork?
There are some really cool personalised things you can get like this: http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/thedriftingbear/product/personalised-typographic-coordinate-print

Depends on whether you want to stick to the traditional gift of paper or not? My first husband, for our first anniversary, bought my tickets to an event I very much wanted to attend (probably not very romantic to most, since it was a hockey game, but it suited me :D ) and some paraphernalia like a jersey to wear. Then he basically made the whole day a date. It was probably the best of all the gifts he gave me in eight years.

Another paper idea, if he's into it, would maybe be a fine book - maybe one full of images from a favourite photographer, or something celebrating his football team. Or a nice edition of something you'd like to read together?

Along these lines and in keeping with it being the paper anniversary, if he is into photography, a print from a photographer he admires or a coffee table book of the work of a photographer or photography subject that interests him

I agree with the suggestions for "paper" gifts, if only because year two is cotton and WHO DOESN'T need a cotton candy machine?!

Thanks everyone for the ideas - keep 'em coming. My brain is all over the place now. So many good ideas already!!  I forgot about the "paper" theme. I'm sure he doesn't know this, but it doesn't mean that I can't go with the paper theme. You guys are awesome!

Lara- well thank you! LOL!  I think so!

MissJoules - that would be a gift for ME!

I got my husband an "anniversary book" for our first anniversary.  It has space for each year to put a picture and then you write a few words about the year and what you did for your anniversary.  We really enjoy writing in it every year and deciding what photos to put in.

This is the one I got:

We didn't have a proper wedding album-just digital photos. So for my paper gift I printed out all our wedding photos and our honeymoon photos and did two nice matching leather albums. DH loved it, which was nice.

That is a nice idea as well. :) Fortunately, our friends (semi-pro photographers) put together two different albums for us. Digital photos are great, but a book is a real keepsake. :)

First anniversary is paper.

As my wife wasn't driving and didn't know the area she got me to drive her to a house twice and just said it was something to do with my present! She had managed to sneak out a photo of my grandfather in his World War 1 uniform which was rather tatty (the photo, not the uniform!), and got it scanned and restored and lots of copies of it, mainly so I could have it framed together with my grandfather's medals. I was stunned!

You say he's a Man Utd fan, I saw someone mention something like this before

Tykeman - aww, that was a really nice gift your wife had made.

Actually, I got him one of those books about 3 years ago. It is sitting on our bookshelf as I speak. :)

We exchanged cards on our first anniversary and
I printed an ad in the local paper with our wedding picture in it. I think we went

5. He drinks port, whiskey and Stella Artois (not all together :D)

How about a bottle of his favourite drink with a personalised wine label (yes it is also a shameless plug-if are interested the link to my DH's website is at the bottom of my post- but they are very popular for anniversaries)
