In my humble opinion, blends can be really nice when they're made with good quality whisky (i.e Johnny Walker Blue) -
This is because you can take the best of every flavour and mellow and mix and add to get the best taste.

Exactly! It would be SACRILEGE to add soda to Johnnie Walker Blue! :o

Oh how I love whisk(e)y!

I haven't much to add, as many people have it covered. I will say that I find the standard Glenmorangie to be a bit like Jameson in that it's easier to drink. If you're a bit worried about straying too much flavour-wise, it's a pretty safe bet.

Best way I've found to try different ones was when I went to the Bow BAr in Edinburgh just said what I'd had before and he said "oh, you like Speyside malts"  as I result he recommend Macallen, the 10 year old was very nice and DW got me a bottle for my birthday while we were there.
I also like Jura and Caol Ila.

I need to wider my sampling....I've had Talesker (nice) and Loighfraig (not as bothered and sorry about the spelling....I can tell it's wrong!)

Hi

Just stumbled across this thread and I'm really liking some of the suggestions from Phatbeetle!

I've recently sort of decided to try out more Whisky choices aside from my usual ones. I'm Indian and the staple choices are Johnnie Walker Black label (or Red/Green), Glenfiddich, Chivas Regal. I do have a bottle of Blue Label which I got from a friend who was working at the IT dept. at one of the larger drinks companies (I won't say how much I got it for - Chary will weep!).

The Single Malts are indeed the ones the enthusiasts will always mention, and I have had some but can never remember the names - partly due to being a bit drunk when having them!

At a friends 40th birthday a few years ago, someone decided to bring a bottle of whisky out whilst we were all 'more' drunk and between 4 of us, the bottle lasted perhaps 15 minutes! a very smooth Whisky called 'Monkey Shoulder' ! It's a blend of 3 single malts and now one of my favourites and I've told quite a few other friends as well as family about it - can get it in Tesco and Sainsbury's for around £24/26 I believe.

Will be trying out some more whisky's, so sorry I can't offer much in the way of suggestions for a more special one fit for a partner's birthday !

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Thanks for all the suggestions and descriptions (there is a lot to learn!).  Today I went to Latitude http://latitudewine.co.uk/ in Leeds (recommended by Mrs. R) and decided on Scapa.

It fit the budget, is a single malt, and something hubby's not tried before, so successful birthday present shopping--done!
