What did you do the last night before you moved for good?
« on: October 11, 2012, 01:07:46 AM »
I've got just over a week before I move (yay!) Just starting to think about all the "last times" kinds of things to do the last night/day before I leave. I know I'll be back, of course. But whenever I left London, I always had a few things I did or places I went "one more time" before I left.

One of the things I'm really considering is going to a midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show at an old theater (cinema) downtown. I've always wanted to go and I got an email the other day saying that they are having showings every Friday in Oct for Halloween! I'm trying to see friends most days/evenings between now and then. And of course spending time with family.

Anything you did that you are happy you did? Anything you wish you'd done?

I should add, that I was just in my local supermarket and got a bit verklempt thinking about how I won't be going there anymore! (yeah, I know!!)

I was still packing right up until an after before I left for the airport.  The main thing that I am glad that I did--- I stayed up all night with my family..didn't sleep until I was on the plane... and then slept the whole way here. Woke up in Edinburgh refreshed and ready to start my new life.

I said most of my goodbyes, to friends and family, a few days before I left.  I had to leave so early for the airport, that was the best way.

The next week is going to go by sooo fast for you. It will seem like you blinked and it's time to go.

Oh I'm sure I was recovering from a hangover.  [smiley=mad.gif] [smiley=puke.gif] [smiley=sleeping2.gif] [smiley=oops.gif] I moved on the 2nd January, so the night before was New Years Day.  :P

Katrina was hitting so we were huddled in the hallway hoping the roof didn't come off.

I went to dinner with my Mom, Dad, Brother, Aunt and Cousin (I had sort of a going away party earlier that week with my mom's side of the family) and then spent the rest of the night packing and consoling my mom.

During that last week I saw my friends and said my goodbyes, finished up things at work, ordered ridiculous amount of takeaways that I was going to miss and drank an unhealthy amount of my favorite coffee. I also got sick again. That was fun.

Anyway, the time you have left is going to go fast, so try to make the most of it. There's no right or wrong way to spend that time, so do what you think is best. SAFE TRAVELS!

I can't remember, but I don't think I did anything special the night before. I know that the Sunday before I had one last fling at Drag Brunch with a group of friends. We were regulars, so that seemed a fitting send-off.

The specific timeline is a bit fuzzy, but I know I had a night out with a few friends at my favorite dive bar a couple of nights before I left. That dive bar no longer exists in any way, shape, or form so I'm pleased that I got one last hurrah out of it.

I think the day before I left, I went and got Chipotle and Jamba Juice with my best guy friend/roommate at the time, cause that's just what we do. I'm pretty sure that night  I went to Hoboken with my two best girl friends to see the singer of my favourite band do a solo show.

I was staying with my parents the week before I left, so I saw them every day.

Slept in an empty apartment on a leaky air mattress.
On the way to the airport the next day we ate at IHOP (oh how I miss IHOP).

If you get a chance go to Rocky! I spent many a Saturday night at the Skywalk Cinema in Cincinnati when I was a teenager.

LOL! I can relate. I spent about a month in an empty apartment on a borrowed futon! I had started on a borrowed leaky air mattress, but it was a bit too leaky!

I was packing up until the bitter end - I was at UPS @ 9PM the night before, ringing my hubby in the UK (woke him up) for our corporate UPS # so I could ship packages to my mum in TX for storage!

My flight wasn't until the next night so I went to bed at my BFF's house, then we went back to my old house the next day to put out trash, say good bye to the neighbors, etc. and then she took me to the airport that afternoon.

We had wanted to have a nice, calm dinner the night before, but the mad rush to UPS ruined all that. Really could've used another week but my Aunt left town for vacation the same day I did & my BFF was doing the same the day after I left, so unless I wanted to cab it to the airport by myself, I had to get out quicker than planned.

I didn't do anything special the night before but spend time with my mom and dad. I had been staying with them the six months I was waiting to apply and get my visa. I had done my work going away party a few weeks before...and my family and I all went out for a big meal the Saturday before we left. Trying to keep mom from crying was my main goal for the night....I was unsuccessful  :(

On the way to the airport the next day we ate at IHOP (oh how I miss IHOP).

Mmmmm IHOP!  I miss it too.  :)

My last day/night I was packing, went to the dentist for a final appt, and generally just running around like a crazy woman (while DH was there - he went alone to the beach that day & got sunburnt feet - ha!).  Then I blubbered when the taxi came & I'd said goodbye to my best friend/housemate & his girlfriend & my cat - they kept the cat.

In the final year I was there, when DH & I were dating, and especially the last 6 months (kind of thinking I might not be living there that much longer), I spent loads of time with friends - going & seeing & doing all the stuff I'd always taken for granted but never got around to doing before (nature reserves, walks, etc).  Had a brilliant time & saw so many new things in Tampa Bay I'd never seen before - after having lived there by that time for about 6+ years.  Happy times & made it bittersweet to leave.

We watched Obama win his first term. It was brilliant! (We had specifically extended the stay so I could vote/we could watch the returns).

It's all such a blur to me now!  I had so many farewell dinners with different groups of friends, I could have had one the night before.  I know I worked right up until a day or two before I left.  I'm sure I was fussing with my luggage and carry-on as well.  I can't even remember how I got to the airport, but I'm thinking a taxi??  It was only 5 years ago but I must have blocked a lot of it out.  :-\\\\

It was an exciting time though!

For my list night, I went to see "Midnight in Paris" with one of my best friends at the Charles Theatre in Baltimore. It was just like any old night we might go to the movies, and I am so glad for it.
Sometimes I amaze even myself.
