Sore Throat!!!
« on: October 11, 2012, 05:14:14 PM »
Anyone with good sore throat remedies?

I have a killer sore throat, and can't even seem to scratch the surface of the pain.  It hurts to swallow, cough - anything!  I can't talk above a whisper, and even that hurts!  :(

I've tried the numbing sprays.  The soothing lozenges.  The syrups.  The all in one cold tablets with paracetamol.  Paracetamol on it's own.  Honey.  Warm water with honey.  Warm water on it's own.

I think you need to go to the doctor, because if it's a bacterial infection you'll need antibiotics. Until then, my husband swears by Fisherman's Friend lozenges, and warm milk with honey is nice too.

No advice - except to say I've had sore throats like that before (when I was in the US) & I sympathise.  It hurts so much that it makes it difficult to sleep & get rest to make you feel better.  I do hope you feel better soon!

Advil. Helps with the inflammation. And hot tea. Lots of it. I have the remains of a sore throat (and cough/congestion) that ended up as a sinus/upper respiratory infection now. I have to constantly keep drinking something to keep it wet.

Hope you feel better soon!

Aww poor you.  I actually like to suck on ice cubes when I have a nasty sore throat.  The cooling is nice, but you don't have to swallow.

I agree with DrSuperL, if you haven't been to the doctor, definitely see one.

Also, I know you've posted before about stomach issues, so if you've got any kind of indigestion or reflux, the acid is terrible for the throat I'm not sure what you can take with anything else you may be on, but milk of magnesia can help, or any kind of indigestion stuff as well? (ignore if not related, though somethings milk of magnesia seems to help a sore throat as well, because it coats it nicely)

Feel better soon!

Gargle with hot salt water?  It helps for me, but don't swallow.

OUCH! Warm tea with honey usually soothes mine. BUT, like someone said, if its that bad, you should see the doctor.

Gargling with salt water is a tried & tested one. Fisherman's friends lozenges are great - if you can take them. Unfortunately with the meds I'm on, I can't take cold meds or throat drops. I've found that tea with honey helps a LOT. Hope you're feeling better soon.

I was going to suggest the gargling with salt water one too.  My family always did this.  It doesn't take it away, but seems to shorten it and make it more bearable so it heals much more quickly.  My current GP always tells me to do that too when I have a sore throat, so it isn't just an old wives tale.

This is going to sound mad, but marshmallows. I was shocked the first time I tried it, but it did wonders! Plus, if it doesn't work for you, it's marshmallows, and who doesn't want marshmallows?

Although I do agree that the salt water can help, it always makes me feel sick as well so it's not much of a boon for me.
