Advice please anyone !
« on: October 04, 2004, 06:37:13 PM »
Hi
Just posted my intro earlier on the welcome forum. Thanks to 'balmerhon' for your greeting and advice. I am in my 1st year of an online course to get a 'IT BA degree' and am wondering which diretion to take ie Graphics/ Multimedia or Web development etc, re getting a decent job and career when we move to the UK. I am in my mid forties and maybe the job market is aimed at younger people.
Any advice on a career direction would be appreciated.

Thanks
Karen, NC

Welcome!  :)

Just a question of clarification....are you moving to the UK on a settlement visa or are you hoping to get a visa based on your job?  Reason I ask is because it depends very much on the answer as to whether or not your current degree will be helpful for you here.  If you need a specialism to be allowed to move here, then I wouldn't think anything in the IT field would quite cut it.  But if your husband is British or you have some other right to move here based on settlement, I'm sure your current field will be fine.

It also makes a big difference as to where you will be living.  Jobs in London are fairly easy to find, especially IT ones.  But if you're living in a rural village in Cornwall, you might have a slightly tougher time.

My 2p

Graphics/Multimedia -- especially in the legal field.  I've noticed ALOT more graphics being used for court cases AND to describe evidence along with pictures.

Web design -- they're teaching that to 6th formers and YOUNGER -- it's getting to be more and more "common."

HTH  ;)

Hi Wishstar

I will be coming to England as the wife of a British citizen. Though I doubt that we could ever afford to live in the London area sadly. Thanks a lot for your advice though and I will keep reading and seeking out info from agencies etc

Regards
