Thanks Americans
« on: October 25, 2012, 12:41:07 AM »
I have found the time I have spent browsing this forum in the past couple of evenings fascinating. As a Brit living in Britain with a British partner who is currently working in India, I do not 'belong' here by any stretch of the imagination, and just stumbled upon your forum quite by chance.

Anyway, I have been a little saddened to read about the anti-American sentiment some of you have been subjected to by us Brits.

I realised that I can be a bit of an 'anti' as well sometimes, so I tried an experiment to name as many things that I am grateful to America / American culture for as possible in 10 minutes, even though I am yet to visit the States & this is what I came up with...

Blue Jeans
Quentin Tarantino films
The collected work of Bill Hicks
King of the Hill
Blues music
Martin Luther King's 'I have a dream' speech
I love the idea of Route 66 & Highway 1 (nobody would write a song about the A38 or the M25!)
The first 2 Star Wars films (yeah, I know, filmed here)
Fried chicken
Franklin D Roosevelt
The Simpsons
Jonny Cash's live prison recordings
True Blood
The Godfather I & II
’61-4 Continentals - especially the black one in The Matrix
Cherry Pepsi & Vanilla Coke
24
Pulled pork sandwiches
Bourbon whiskey
Everything Bill Bryson has written
Full Metal Jacket
Chris Rock's brave and brilliant 'Black people -VS- the N*****s'
The Blues Brothers (only the original)
Roller Coasters
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (Hunter S Thompson)
Gumbo & corn bread
Gibson SG guitars
 ‘57 Fleetwood 75
The summer of love & counter culture
The Shawshank Redemption
Faith no More's 'Angel Dust' album
Readable economic and political writers - Joseph Stiglitz, Eric Schlosser
Easy Rider
Huckleberry Finn
Trying prohibition and proving it is a stupid idea
Debbie Harry
The works of Tenesee Williams
Roadside diners
On the Road (Jack Kerouac)
Great soul music put out on the 'Atlantic' label
Lou Reed's 'Transformer' album
Late 50’s jukeboxes and pinball machines
Women with the ‘southern’ accent

Thank you Americans  [smiley=smitten.gif]

Apologies if this makes anybody homesick. It was a nice experience as a Brit reading 'things you love about Britain', so I thought I should share the love before I surf away to cyber pastures new :)

Lol - interestingly enough, I grew up right next to the A38, but lived on Route 66 for a year :P. (And I have to say that it was much safer near the A38, since the stretch of Route 66 I was living on was littered with homeless drug addicts and I felt unsafe just walking down the road or taking the bus).

And woo! I sort of made your list (southern accent!) :P

Welcome to the forum, Wilko. Feel free to stick around. We've got several "natives" here. :)
