Try http://www.majortravel.co.uk ... I just put in 20th October London to SFO and they came up with Continental at 311 pounds.  OK - I know that's not very different to your $600 but I didn't try playing with the dates.  I have used them in the past, and they were fine.

P.S. I tried a similar search with a return flight a week later ... direct availability with Virgin at 245 pounds.  Are you sure you don't want to come back  ;D

I did a quick www.bookingbuddy.com search (orbitz doesn't work because the departure city is out of the US but...) and the key is to fly after Nov. 1st. Fares drop significantly after October. Also, fly early in the week (M,T or W).

I got a round trip (I put in a phony after xmas date for return) of US$591 through Travelocity and Expedia with a departure date of 1 Nov (Monday) and a return of 28 Dec (Tuesday).

If you are 26 or under you should check out www.statravel.co.uk

But I think you can do better. Just remember that flying in November will save you cash.

Have you tried going directly to Virgin and seeing if you can avoid the "agency fees" that Travelocity sometimes apply?

Also, and I cannot believe I forgot this:  www.flightcentre.co.uk

They guarantee they will beat any published airfare you find, including internet. I got a quote from them once and they beat my travelocity fare by $15. But I found a priceline ticket cheaper. Give them a call now that you have your published fare.

Just keep in mind that Virgin and BA just announced a 20 pound increase starting immediately due to higher oil prices.

Not sure if this is irony, but it turns out due to a family emergency I may hve to go back to San Fran for the first weekend in November. I think I am going for Continental, which does a code share with Virgin for all flights to/from London. Cost is $501 return and will ad a good 10k miles to my frequent flyer. If you are flying on the 4th, maybe I'll see you at Heathrow!
